Measurement 101

Your Mission… (Today’s Objective) Essential Question: What are SI Units of Measurement and why do we use them in science? Students Will Know: What SI Units are Why SI is the preferred method of measurement for scientist The science instruments used to find the measurements

Once Upon A Time… Standardized units of measurement were based on parts of the body How would that cause confusion? In the late 1700s the French Academy of Scientists developed a system that would standardize units.

METRIC SYSTEM AKA INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OF UNITS ( SI ) Meter (m)—length, used for measuring the distance between things Second (s)—time, there are 60 of them in a minute Ampere (A)—an amount of electric current, quite shocking; Candela (cd)—brightness, the amount of useful light (light humans can see by) an object emits; Kelvin (K)—temperature, this unit tells you how hot or cold something is Kilogram (kg)—mass, a measure of the amount of matter an object has, related to, but not the same as, weight; and Mole (mol)—an Avogadro's number's worth of "entities," like a chemist's, as opposed to a baker's, dozen (One mole of something has 6.022 x 10 23 atoms or molecules.)

Meters (m) Meters measure length Measure of something from end to end 5 cm

Kelvin (K) Kelvins measure temperature Measures how hot or cold something is 1° K = 273 °C Add 273 degrees to temperature in Celsius to get degrees in Kelvin °C + 273= °K 100°C + 273 373°K Lightning Quick Make it Stick: What would be the temperature in Celsius if the temperature is 573K?

Kilogram (kg) Kilograms measure mass Measure of the amount of matter in an object

Cubic Meter (cm 3 ) Cubic Meters measures volume Measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space Volume = length x width x height cm 3 is the base unit which is also equivalent to 1 mL. We will use the Liters in class.

Lightning Quick Make it Stick: What is the name of this instrument?

Area and Density Area- measure of how much surface area an object has area= length x width Density- ratio of a substance to the volume of the substance density= mass volume

Your Mission… (Today’s Objective) Essential Question: What are SI Units of Measurement and why do we use them in science? Students Will Know: What SI Units are Why SI is the preferred method of measurement for scientist The science instruments used to find the measurements

Exit Ticket How many meters does 1 kilometer equal? What do meters measure?

Where in the World is Volume?!?!
