Unit C-Hardware & Software1 Hardware & Software GNVQ Foundation Unit C

Unit C-Hardware & Software2 What you Need to Learn: Hardware & Software Setting up an ICT System Macros & Templates Standard ways of working About This Unit: 1.Understand ICT specifications for hardware & software 2.Select an ICT system and configure it to meet the needs of users 3.Write a program to improve use of application software (macros) 4.Understand and develop good practice in your use of ICT. Hardware & Software UNIT C Hardware & Software

Unit C-Hardware & Software3 ICT Systems are made up of hardware & software. You must learn to identify and know the purpose of the components that make up an ICT system. Hardware & Software disk drive storage (floppy, hard) other storage, CD ROM, DVD, CD/RW memory (RAM and ROM) ports (input and output connectors) motherboard the central processing unit (CPU). –Input devices –Output devices –Main processing system –Cables and connectors. –Application & Operating System Software ICT System

Unit C-Hardware & Software4 A computer processes data to produce information. INPUTPROCESS OUTPUT -Data -Instructions -Information -Printed Report -Screen Output Input & Output ICT System

Unit C-Hardware & Software5 Input & Output Devices –Devices like.. Printers Output Scanners Input Mouse Input Keyboard Input Monitor Output Input Output Stuff ICT System

Unit C-Hardware & Software6 Many types of input devices. You need to understand their purpose be able to select input devices to meet the needs of users. –Mouse –Roller ball –Keyboard –Scanner –Digital camera –Microphone –Joystick Input Devices ICT System

Unit C-Hardware & Software7 >Technical terms related to printers Inkjet Resolution (dpi) Laser Impact (for multiple forms) >Technical terms used to describe VDU’s size across corners colour or monochrome resolution (pixels) refresh rate (interlace or not) need to understand their purpose select devices to meet the needs of users including: –Visual display unit (vdu) –Printer Different types of printer and visual display units are available. Must be able to identify equipment to meet user needs. Understand the technical terms used in specifications, including: Output Devices ICT System

Unit C-Hardware & Software8 INPUT  Data Central Processing Unit (CPU) The Processor Control Unit Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) OUTPUT  Printed Report  Screen Output  Information Main Memory (Main Storage) BACKING /AUXILIARY STORAGE Control Unit Arithmetic/Logic Unit (ALU) ICT System Central Processing Unit The CPU is is the brains of the computer Carries out all the processing

Unit C-Hardware & Software9 Memory & Storage ICT System Memory RAM (Random Access Memory) Temporarily stores data before it is sent to the CPU Storage Holds the data more permanently Examples are Hard drives Floppy drives CD_ROMS CPU OutputInputRAM Storage

Unit C-Hardware & Software10 You must learn how to connect the hardware components of a stand-alone computer. Connecting Things Setting Up an ICT System These include the main processor unit Keyboard mouse VDU You will need to be able to connect up a computer system

Unit C-Hardware & Software11 You must be able to configure the operating system to meet user needs. Operating System Setting Up an ICT System adjust the time or date create directory-folder structures change the layout of the GUI provide icons or menus to start software select the language set key-operated commands identify suitable printer drivers. You will need to…

Unit C-Hardware & Software12 You must be able to configure the applications software to meet user needs. Application Software Setting Up an ICT System set options for file locations provide and set printer drivers show and change toolbars set spelling and grammar checking. You will need to…

Unit C-Hardware & Software13 Macros help you create your own little programs Macros Macros & Templates You might create macros to replace keyboard keystrokes insert text or graphics open or import files modify page layout or text format. You will need to be able to create macros for different purposes. Macro Opens PowerPoint

Unit C-Hardware & Software14 Templates –most documents have parts that are always the same. –can avoid repeating work every time you create a document. Templates Macros & Templates A letter template may contain: a page layout the logo of the company a date field part of a reference (Our Ref GB/) the opening salutation (Dear) You will need to learn how to create templates to help users. Macro Opens PowerPoint Template

Unit C-Hardware & Software15 To develop good practice in your use of ICT you must: –plan your work >> stick to deadlines –keep a log of ICT problems you met and how you solved them –evaluate your work >> suggest improvements –proof-read your templates or macros to ensure accuracy –keep backup copies of files on another disk and/or in another location –save work regularly using different filenames –keep information free from viruses –respect confidentiality –respect copyright. ICT Use Standard Ways of Working

Unit C-Hardware & Software16 When setting up or using ICT systems, you must be able to work safely. You must ensure that: –cables do not cause an obstacle hazard –cables and connectors are electrically safe –you replace consumable materials correctly. ICT Safety Standard Ways of Working The End
