In the mid-1960s there wasn’t enough healthcare services. The University of Colorado’s School of Nursing gave the idea of a program for nurse practitioners. It was developed into a Master’s degree curriculum. Loretta Ford who was currently an RN co-founded this program. It’s first specialty fields was a pediatrician. Later the other fields were added. In 1917 the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare started to support the Nurse Practitioner programs and started giving money to the programs. It started out to where all you needed was a certificate but then it moved to a master’s degree and now it is moving toward a doctorate degree.
