2 JOB DESPCRIPTION Monitor, record, and report symptoms or changes in patients' conditions Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records Record patients' medical information and vital signs Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient's condition Change patient treatment plans as indicated by responses and conditions Watch over less-skilled nursing or healthcare personnel Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, or evaluate patient care plans Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity Instruct individuals, families, or other groups on topics such as health education, disease prevention, or childbirth and develop health improvement programs Prepare patients for and assist with examinations or treatments

3 WORK SETTING  Generally registered nurses work in physicians offices, nursing homes, hospitals or from the homes of a patient  Depending upon which of these facilities you work in traveling and stress levels can vary  Rn’s can work 5 8 hour days, 4 10 hour days, or 3 12 hour days based on personal preference

4 PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS NEEDED  Must show care and empathy towards patient  Be emotionally stable and able to adapt to new challenges  Physical endurance and hard working ethic  Must have good communication skills

5 EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS  A bachelors degree in nursing is generally what most registered nurses have  Human anatomy, biology, and other science classes are helpful in high school  UW Oshkosh and UW Green Bay both have nursing programs

6 SALARY AND BENIFITS  The average entry wage of a registered nurse is $24.58  Hospitals employ more than half of all registered nurses and pay a mean of $66,220  The benefits package generally includes good insurance, increasing vacation time with seniority and sick days  In Appleton the median pay is 66,178  In Madison the median pay is about 60,000

7 EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK  Registered nursing is projected to grow by over 19% in the next 10 years making it one of the most in demand jobs

8 PERSONAL ASSESSMENT  I think that the flexible hours, relatively low level of college education, working hands on with patients and job growth rate makes a registered nurse a top choice for me
