1 A Review of Math Requirements and Options for the Class of 2016 and Beyond Lynnwood High School Edmonds School District

2 Today we will review…  Math Graduation Requirements for the Classes of 2016-2018  Math Requirements and Appropriate Math Courses for pursuit of a 2-Year Community/Technical College Transfer Degree or 4-Year College and University Admission.  Math Requirements and Appropriate Math Courses for pursuit of a Community/Technical College Career Certificate or Non-Transfer Degree or entrance directly into the workforce.  Requirements for students wishing to enroll in a Non-Algebra 2 course for their Third Math Credit

3 Math Requirements for Graduation Math Requirements for the class of 2016 - 2018:  3.0 total Math Credits  Required Math Courses, Exams and Credits: o Algebra 1 credit and Geometry credit o Third Math Credit of Student’s Choosing o Option 1: Algebra 2 o Option 2: An Approved Non-Algebra 2 Course o Passing 1 state math assessment: Algebra 1 End-of-Course Exam or Geometry End-of-Course Exam or the Smarter Balanced 11 th grade assessment.  Third Math Credit choice is based on Student’s Goals specified in their “High School and Beyond Plan”

4 District Math Pathway Options

5 Option 1: Algebra 2 Algebra 2 is the appropriate choice if… According to your High School and Beyond Plan if your GOAL is:  To enter directly into a 4-Year College or University, or  To enter a Community/Technical College Transfer Degree Program and then go to a 4-Year College or University, or  Unclear - but you want to be prepared to enter a Community College Transfer Program or 4-Year College/University if you later decide to pursue these options Additional Important Information:  While Algebra 2 is the minimum requirement for a 4-year college, many 4-year colleges prefer more math.  For 4-year colleges, a senior year math-based course is required (for example, chemistry, physics, statistics, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, etc)

6 Option 2: Non-Algebra 2 Course A Non-Algebra 2 course is appropriate if… According to your High School and Beyond Plan if your GOAL is:  Is not to enroll in Community College Transfer Program or 4-Year College immediately after graduation, and  To either enter the workforce directly after high school or enroll in a Community/Technical College Certificate or Non-Transfer Degree program designed to prepare you for a specific career field.  Community and Technical Colleges offer a wide variety of certificate and non-transfer degree programs designed to prepare students for the workforce within one to two years.  Most of these career oriented programs do not require Algebra 2, and are articulated with high school Career and Technical Education courses as part of a career oriented program of study. and…  You are, or will be, pursuing a Career-Oriented Program of Study in High School for which a non-Algebra 2 course choice is appropriate.

7 Career Oriented Programs of Study A Career Oriented Program of Study is a high school to college pathway with a specific college career certificate or degree program. It also includes a high school program of study focused on preparing students for immediate employment. 8 Option 2: Non-Algebra 2 Course Additional Important Information Taking a Non-Algebra 2 course as a final high school math credit:  Is not the appropriate option for those wishing to prepare for a Transfer Degree or 4-Year College/University admission.  Does not shut the door on pursuing a Transfer Degree or admission to a 4- Year College or University. However, it does mean that students will need to take additional math courses in college if they later decide to pursue these options.  For students who take a Non-Algebra 2 course in 11 th grade, they can still take Algebra 2 as seniors if they wish.

9 Choosing A Non-Algebra 2 Option In order to take a Non-Algebra 2 course for your Third Math Credit, students need to:  Have earned credit in Algebra 1, and  Have earned credit or be concurrently enrolled in Geometry, and  Attend a meeting with a High School Representative and their Parent/Guardian where they will: 1.Discuss their post-high school goals and the admission requirements for two and four-year colleges, and 2.Demonstrate through their High School and Beyond Plan that they are pursuing a Career Oriented Program of Study for which a non-Algebra 2 course is appropriate, and 3.Sign an approval form, along with their parent/guardian and high school representative, which verifies that all parties agree the non-Algebra 2 course is appropriate for the student’s education and career goals.
