GRAMMAR Lesson 3 ال  ‘ ال ’ or ‘al’ is the Arabic definite article that corresponds to the English ‘the’  Changes a noun from indefinite to definite  When ‘ ال ’ is used with a noun, the tanween (indefinite article/ double vowel or –n sound at the end of a noun) is dropped For example: كتاب : Kitaabun- الكتاب : al-kitaabu

الحروف الشمسية و الحروف القمرية الحروف الشمسية : Solar letters الحروف القمرية : Lunar letters The tip of the tongue plays a role in the articulation of the solar letters The tip of the tongue does not play a role in the articulation of the lunar letters

‘ ال ’ و ‘ الحروف الشمسية ’ If ‘al’ is prefixed to a noun that begins with a letter from the solar letters then the ‘l’ sound from ‘al’ is assimilated to the solar letter For example: al-samaku is pronounced as-samaku al-deeku is pronounced ad-deeku al-najmu is pronounced an-najmu However, in writing the ‘l’ is preserved from ‘al’, but, to indicate the assimilation a shaddah ( ّ ) is written above the solar letter For example: السّمك

‘ الحروف القمرية ’ و ‘ ال ’ If ‘al’ is joined to a noun that begins with a letter from the lunar letters then no such assimilation takes place, rather, the ‘l’ sound from ‘al’ remains. For example: Baytun begins with a letter from the lunar letters, so, if we join ‘al to ‘baytun’ it is pronounced as: ‘al-baytu’ not ‘ab-baytu’

1 – The merchant 2 – The Garment/ thobe 3 – The rooster 4 – The gold 5 – The man 6 – The flower 7 – The fish 8 – The sun 9 – The chest 10 – The guest 11 – The student 12 – The back 13 – The meat 14 – The star

The ‘a’ from ‘al’ is pronounced only when it is not preceded by another word. If it is preceded by another word then it is dropped in pronunciation but, remains in writing. For example: المنديل Al-mindeel The handkerchief If it is preceded by ‘و’ (and) then the ‘a’ from ‘al’ is dropped so we say: و المنديل wa l-mindeelnotwa al-mindeel Note: The initial vowel that is dropped (a,i and u) from the ‘al’ is called hamzatul-wasl
