El verbo venir The verb venir means to come…

The verb venir is a special kind of verb because it is irregular ! What is an irregular verb? An irregular verb does not conjugate (change) according to regular rules of conjugation…

Why is it irregular? Venir is irregular because it is a stem-changing verb AND it has an irregular yo form! What is a stem-changing verb? A stem-changing verb has a spelling change in the stem!

What is the stem of a verb? The stem of a verb is the verb minus the –ar, -er, or –ir ending. EX: venir ven = stem -ir = ending

Stem-changing verbs are verbs that have a change in how the stem is spelled when they are conjugated. They are also referred to as boot verbs (Because the forms inside the boot change, and the ones outside the boot do NOT stem-change)!

How do we conjugate venir?

First, we need to find the verb stem. To do this, we drop the –ar, -er, or –ir off of the infinitive. venir Next, we will change the e to ie in the verb stem. Then, we add our regular endings for present tense.

Why are these verbs also called boot verbs? yo nosotros/as tú él ellos ella ellas usted ustedes If we drew a boot around our verb chart, all of the forms within the boot are stem- changing. All of the forms that are NOT in the boot (nosotros) are normal.

Please note: Stem-changing verbs in the present tense have a spelling change in all forms EXCEPT FOR NOSOTROS!!!

How do we conjugate venir?

There is something weird about this verb. Can you see what it is? ¡Ojo!

Venir = to come yo nosotros nosotras tú élellos ellaellas ustedustedes vengo vienes viene venimos vienen What happened? Why didn’t it stem-change?

What was different about this stem-changing verb? It’s yo form does not stem-change. Also, it is irregular.

Irregular Yo verbs… Are verbs that have an irregular “yo” form. There are 3 types of irregular yo verbs. 1.“oy” verbs 2.“go” verbs 3.“zco” verbs

Which type of irregular yo is venir? Venir is a “go” verb because its yo form ends in “go”. * VENGO

We will learn about other irregular yo verbs later.

Ejemplos de venir: -¿Vienes a la casa de María? -Sí, yo vengo ahora. -Are you coming to María’s house? -Yes, I am coming now.
