What and why Commissioning? No clear, single, agreed definition of commissioning At its simplest, commissioning is the process of planning, agreeing and monitoring services…. (NHS) Aims of commissioning including: –facilitate clear lines of public accountability for performance –clarify and benchmark costs –encourage providers to respond more accurately and effectively to the needs of individuals –challenge traditional patterns of resource allocation and sectional interests –make priority decisions more explicit Be clear about what you mean when you talk about commissioning A/Prof Helen Dickinson, School of Government, University of Melbourne
