Telco Foreign Ownership changes Reduced foreign ownership restrictions will make investments in telco & related services easier & more transparent. GOV: NBTC may relax the current 49% restriction on foreign ownership of local telcos, citing that previous laws contradicted THL’s free trade principles. Restrictions enforced by NTC (NBTC’s predecessor) in Aug proved ineffective with recent allegations on exceeded foreign ownership limit on DTAC. High Impact: Changes in law potentially change restrictions on provision of new cloud services. NBTC will meet stakeholders on Nov 30. VN Rural Internet connection project Short-term the implementation of the project will provide biz opp for ICT vendors. Long-term, increased access will create steady demand for ICT-related products & services GOV: Proj worth USD50.5m & will install Internet-connected PCs at public libraries, communal cultural houses, & post office across 40 cities & provinces from 2011-16. Funding comes from Min of Info & Comms, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, & Microsoft Proj extended as previous proj implemented in Thai Nguyen, Nghe An, & Tra Vinh provinces was successful in providing Internet access to more than 2000 people Med impact: H/w, s/w, ISPs & other ICT vendors will be tapped during implementation.
