2 Using familiar and formal with greetings There are different ways to say how are you in Spanish. ¿Cómo estás? and ¿Qué tal? are familiar greetings. ¿ Cómo está usted (Ud.)? is a formal greeting.

3 Using familiar and formal with greetings Familiar greetings are used with:  Family  Friends  Someone younger Formal greetings are used with:  A person you don’t know well(stranger)  Someone older  Someone for whom you wish to show respect (in family or position of influence – i.e. President)

4 Subject Pronouns Subjects are used at the beginning of a sentence to state who is doing the action. Subject pronouns can replace a person’s name or description. Masculine subject pronouns are used for all boys or a group of boys and girls. Feminine subject pronouns are used for all girls only.

5 Yo I Nosotros/ Nosotras We (mas./fem.) Tú You (fam.) Vosotros/Vosotras You all (fam.) (Spain only) Él/Ella/Usted (Ud.) He/She/You (for.) Ellos/Ellas/ Ustedes(Uds.) They(mas/fem), You all (for.)

6 Yo soy I am Nosotros(as) somos We (mas., fem.) are Tú eres You (fam.) are Vosotros(as) sois You all(mas., fem.) (fam.) are Él, Ella, Ud. es He/She is, You (for.) are Ellos(as), Uds. son They(mas., fem.), You all (for.) are Ser forms with subject pronouns

7 Ser with Countries To say where someone is from, use: Subject + Form of ser + de + Country For example: I am from the United States. Yo soy de los Estados Unidos. You (fam.) are from Peru. Tú eres de Perú.

8 Gustar To say what someone likes to do use the form of Gustar and an activity. Activities: Bailar – to dance Cantar – to sing Comer – to eat Escribir – to write Leer – to read Nadar – to swim Patinar – to skate Trabajar – to work

9 Me gusta() I like Nos gusta We (mas., fem.) like Te gusta You (fam.) like Os gusta You all(mas., fem.) (fam.) like Le gusta He/She likes, You (for.) like Les gusta They(mas., fem.), You all (for.) like Gustar – to like, to be pleasing to

10 G USTAR WITH ACTIVITIES Ex. I like to dance. Me gusta bailar. Ex. You (fam.) like to swim. Te gusta nadar. When you are talking about a dislike, just add no out front. Ex. He doesn’t like to sing. No le gusta cantar. Ex. We don’t like to work. No nos gusta trabajar.
