1 The Cycle of Revolution There are universal conditions that bring about revolution, show the revolution in process, and finally bring a revolution to an end. We will examine these in reference to the French Revolution. Keep in mind the “Ancien Regime” notes as you consider these conditions...

2 The Cycle of Revolution: Pre-conditions Class discontent/bitterness Govt. does not respond to societal needs Can’t/won’t re- organize $/taxes unfairly

3 The Cycle of Revolution: Rev. in Process Impossible Demands made/Revs. gain power Moderates rule/but Radicals seek more change Radicals gain power/a “Strong Man” emerges

4 The Cycle of Revolution: Rev. in Process A new “Utopia” is formed/Enemies are killed This “Reign of Terror” will turn on its founders Radicals have eliminated themselves, and moderates regain power

5 The Cycle of Revolution: Revolution Results “Order” is restored Were original goals attained? Which social classes benefitted?

6 The Cycle of Revolution: Results??? How much has the old order changed? To what extent are we “back where we started?” Is the “New Boss” same as the “Old Boss” Have the lower classes been able to change their economic or social status?
