Terms Alliance for Progress: initiated by JFK in 1961 to est. economic cooperation between North and South America. Intended to counter the emerging communist threat from Cuba. N.A.T.O.: military alliance est. by North Atlantic Treaty on April 4 th, 1949. Headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. If any member is attacked, all join in their defense. O.A.S.: international org., headquartered in Washington, D.C. Members are the 35 independent states of the Americas.

Terms S.E.A.T.O.: international org. for defense est. Sept. 8 th, 1954. Created to block further Communist gains in Southeast Asia. Headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand. Dissolved June 30 th, 1977. United Nations: international org. that facilitates cooperation in law, security, economic development, social progress and human rights. Founded in 1945, replaced League of Nations in hope it would intervene in conflicts between nations and avoid war. Security Council: consists of 5 permanent members (China, France, Russia, the U.K. and the U.S.) which have veto power over any resolution. Also has ten temporary members that are elected for 2-yr. terms by U.N. General Assembly.

Terms Warsaw Pact: military alliance of socialist states in Central and Eastern Europe. Est. May 14 th, 1955 in Warsaw, Poland. Soviets claimed pact served to counter potential threat from NATO. Dissolved July 1 st, 1991.
