3 MISSION STATEMENT 3 The mission of the Environmental Health and Safety office is to support the university community by working with all university members to provide a safe and healthy working, teaching, learning, and living environment. This involves the creation of an atmosphere of environmental health and safety awareness through training and faculty, staff, and student involvement, as well as a commitment to regulatory compliance.

8 Accident & Illness Prevention PIM #27 8  The accident and illness prevention plan is designed to provide an atmosphere of safety and health awareness through training and employee and student involvement.  The plan also addresses Facility Inspections, Hazard Assessments, Industrial Hygiene Surveys, Additions/ Changes in Equipment, Processes or Chemicals, Education and Training, Accident Investigation, and Disciplinary Action.

9 Facility Inspection 9  Campus Facilities are inspected by our office twice a year and once a year by the Department of Insurance.  Departments are responsible for correcting reported violations.

14 Accident Reporting (PIM #26 ) 14  All job related injuries or illnesses shall be reported, evaluated, and treated.  Each employee has the responsibility for reporting injuries/illnesses immediately to his/her supervisor using the Employee Incident Report. 18 Medical Treatment 18  Student Health Center is your primary contact for medical treatment.  Employees requiring treatment should be escorted by their supervisor to the medical facility.  Should emergency treatment be necessary, call Police and Public safety at 911 for assistance.

20 Incident Investigation 20  All occupational injuries/illnesses must be investigated as soon as possible after the occurrence! The employee’s immediate supervisor is responsible for conducting the investigation and documenting findings on Supervisor’s Incident Investigation Report.  The immediate supervisor is responsible for notifying the EH&S (x71111) within 24 hours.  The EH&S Office monitors all investigation reports.

26 What is Workers’ Compensation? 26  A program that provides protection for North Carolina employees and employer against loss due to work related injuries or illnesses.  Who’s covered? FT/PT Faculty and Staff Senior Administrative Officers Student employees Temporary employees (Except those contracted through Temporary Agencies).

27 Workers' Compensation Program 27  Self-insured employer  Third Party Administrator (TPA)  The weekly benefit is equal to 66% (2/3) of the employee's average weekly earnings  There is a seven calendar day waiting period where no compensation for lost time will be allowed.

28 Who plays a role in the WC program? 28 Supervisors  Complete Appropriate Forms  Refer for Treatment  Forward All Forms to EH&S Office  Follow Your Employee’s Work Restrictions  Maintain Contact with Your Employee Employees  Notify Supervisor Immediately  Complete Appropriate Form  See Authorized Treating Physician and Return to Work as Instructed  Provide Supervisor with Medical Notes/Restrictions  Keep in Touch with the Supervisor Call the WC Administrator With Questions, x71111
