3 Aims and Objectives  The Welsh Information Literacy Project aims to promote the understanding and development of Information Literacy in education, the workplace, and the wider community in Wales.

4 Information Literacy is... “…knowing when and why you need information, where to find it and how to evaluate use and communicate it in an ethical manner” Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals (CILIP) 2004 4

6 Information Literacy in Wales – the workplace  73% of workplaces in Wales use the Internet for advice guidance and information.  36% use it to search for information on competitors.  16% of Welsh employers stated that there were gaps between the skills held by their ICT staff and those needed by the firm.  33% of search engine users understand that the accuracy of the information given on websites is variable.  An average of 12.7 hrs per week are spent using the Internet.  An average of 6.4 hours is spent looking for information.  The cost to the UK of inefficient information searching and retrieval is between £3.7 billion/£8.2 billion per year. 6

9 Objectives Phases 1 & 2 were hosted by Cardiff University and developed:  An overarching statement on Information Literacy in Wales  Web presence for the project  A report on Information Literacy provision in across library sectors in Wales  An Information Literacy framework for Wales  Accredited units of learning in Information Literacy 9

20 Community Groups  My role is to develop Information Literacy opportunities in the community.  My aim is to introduce the project to those who could benefit from taking part.  The level that I have been working on is Agored Cymru, Entry Level 1. The Welsh Awarding Organisation, specialising in meeting the needs of all learners in wales.

22 Digartref Ynys Môn Digartref Ynys Môn is a registered charity which provides relief services to homeless people through the delivery of a range of projects and services that aim to enable individuals and families to achieve independent living.

23 Digartref Ynys Môn  ‘Get Started’ is a programme for both young people accessing their housing services, and other young people in the community in need of extra support, covering tenancy skills, health & well-being, and employability.  Developing Skills It acts like a stepping stone where young people can gain the confidence to move on into further education, employment, volunteering or further training. 25 Gorwel Woman's Refuge  Gorwel is a women’s aid refuge Centre in Anglesey North Wales.  They provide information, housing and support to adults, children and young people who are effected by domestic abuse.  Staff feels that the group has benefited from taking part by gaining increased confidence and developing new skills that will help in the future.

26 Gorwel Client Feedback What do you think you have learnt : “By taking part in the Information Literacy Course one of the things I learnt is to find information on Job seeking and employment. Also I have learnt to search for information on a specific subject more effectively by using different resources that is available to us such as the Local Library and the internet. Another good way of finding information is through one to one conversations with organisations such as the Job centre where I could gather the correct information on Job seeking and the employment options available.” Skills that will help me in the future: The types of skills that I have gained by taking part in the course, which will benefit me in the future are:  Searching for information quickly and efficiently  Comparing information  Communicating skills  Taking on board what others say  Following instructions  Identifying people or organisation where I can get the information that I require

27 Gwynedd Youth Service  Gwynedd Youth Service have 38 youth clubs around the County.  They run a variety of projects and volunteering opportunities for young people.  Full time youth service workers work in the Gwynedd community.  Alongside the local Council, they work with young people who are disengaged from education, training, work and the community.

28 Gwynedd Youth Service  Full time Youth workers are taking part in the information literacy project by completing it with their community groups who is on the Get Back Into Work Programme.  They are also doing the information literacy unit with their volunteers.

29 Nacro  Nacro Ynys Môn Floating Support aims to equip ex-offenders with the practical skills and support to live safe, independent, crime-free lives.  They intend to do the information literacy unit as part of their skills programme. “Changing Lives, Reducing Crime”.

31 The Information Literacy Project WILP – to Conclude  This unit helps people to look for information efficiently and effectively.  It introduces people to a new way of searching and evaluating information.  It promotes the library and its value.  And develops skills. Today, these skills are essential. Too many people miss out on the basic training that allows them to find suitable information. This project gives people the opportunity to develop information literacy skills that will help them in all aspect of their lives, from searching for jobs, to researching at work, as well researching at leisure, i.e. searching family history. Thank You

34 Work with the Public and Staff in libraries  We wanted to develop Information Literacy sessions for users (formal or informal assistance to users in developing or enhancing their use of library services and facilities.  To do this we at first needed to develop staff training, and encourage them to do qualifications in Information Literacy. 34

35 Aims and Objectives – Phase 3 - 5 – Public Libraries  To support Information Literacy skills development amongst public library staff.  To support public library services in the delivery of Information Literacy to users. 35

36 Agored Information Literacy Units  Units – now being piloted. All units have a credit value of 3 credits (1 credit = 10 learning hours). Tutor assessment about 15 hrs.  Levels – Entry Level/Level 8 (2 = GCSE, 3 ‘A’ Level)  Credits - (30 learning hours at Level 3)  Based on the Seven Pillars model for Information Literacy: Identify, Scope, Plan, Gather, Evaluate, Manage, Present. 36

38 Entry Level  About 10 learning hours to achieve a formal qualification, working with a mentor/assessor  We are providing registration costs for pilot groups  Entry Level is mapped to Essential Skills Wales  Four Learning Outcomes  Assessment can be done any way, but we can provide an Evidence Booklet. Other projects use filming/photography, discussion, or reflective journals

39 Level 2/3 Library Staff  Assessment was done via Logbooks, although it can be done in a variety of ways  Assessment is based on practical library searches and research. Staff take an enquiry and fill in a logbook.  Students can attach product evidence, eg prints out from a catalogue  Guidance notes are provided 39

40 What Information Literacy skills help Library staff to assist the general public?  Identifying what information is required.  Assessing the client’s knowledge and identify gaps.  Planning a strategy for locating the information.  Locating and access the information required.  Evaluating and assessing the information and data. located – is it what was required? (currency, bias etc).  Organising and applying the information found – does it help the client make a decision?  Presenting the results of the research appropriately. 40

46 The Welsh Public Library Standards and Information Literacy  New WPLS Making a Difference 2014/17  Outcomes and impacts include digital inclusion using the public library service  WPLS Quality Indicator 3: libraries should offer Information Literacy training sessions, to enable users to identify and access resources efficiently and critically evaluate information  Staff will have the skills and knowledge to support users with ICT  Libraries will assist users in accessing local and national e government resources  Events and activities in libraries can include digital and information literacy workshops  Library service contributes to local and national agendas in terms of digital and information literacy
