5 Your Reaction: Drug Addicted Babies is an example of a birth defect. What was your reaction to this clip? What do you think is the importance of learning about birth defects?

6 What Exactly is a Birth Defect? Definition: Physical or structural abnormality that develops at or before birth, and is present at the time of birth especially as a result of faulty development, environment, hereditary, or injury.

7 Birth Defects About 150,000 babies are born each year with birth defects The parents of 1 out of every 28 babies receive the news that their baby has a birth defect There are over 4,000 known birth defects Birth defects are the leading cause of death in the 1 st year of life.

8 How do Birth Defects Affect the Infant? There are 3 factors that cause birth defects: 1. Hereditary 2. Environmental 3. Combination Q: What do you think these mean?

9 Birth Defects Profile Assignment: Your group will be given an infant’s birth defect profile. The profile is usually told through the parent’s point of view and will go over: the parents discovery of their infant’s birth defect, how the birth defect affects the infant, how infant inherits the birth defect, and much more. Your Task: Assign group roles: Read the profile carefully Summarize the infant’s birth defect profile Answer the following questions (1-5) Present your findings to the class
