Q. What initiatives are in place in this country to keep people involved in sport? Government (2 hours of PE a week) PESSCL Strategy (PE and school sport clubs link) Sport England Youth Sport Trust Active Kids Programme Q. What other opportunities are there to take part in sport other than a performer? A. Leader/ Coach/ Official/ Volunteer Opportunities in Sport Opportunities in Sport Q. What is the PESSCL Strategy? A. PE and school sport clubs link. It’s a government run programme set up to ensure all pupils receive their entitlement to 2 hours of ‘high quality’ PE a week. Q. What is Sport England? A. Sport England is an organisation set up by the government for creating opportunities for people to START, STAY and SUCCEED in Sport.

What is the Youth Sport Trust Initiative? A. An Initiative aimed at years olds to organise and manage sports activities (sports leaders) Q. Explain what the terms START, STAY and SUCCEED mean in relation to Sport England Start- increase participation in order to improve the health of the nation with a focus on priority groups. Stay- Retain people in sport through clubs, coaching, volunteers and competitive opportunities. Succeed- Create opportunities for talented performers to achieve success. Opportunities in Sport Opportunities in Sport Q. What are the 4 stages of the participation pyramid? A. Foundation/ Participation/ Performance/ Excellence. What is the Active Kids programme Initiative? A. An Initiative where various supermarkets and other enterprises run voucher programmes in vouchers are collected and used for sports and other equipment.

Q. Explain what foundation level means in the participation pyramid and where it is? A. At the base of the pyramid (bottom) grass roots. means that most people at the bottom are learning/ experiencing basic sporting skills (PE lessons, multi skills) Q. Explain what Participation means in the participation pyramid and where it is? A. 2nd stage of the pyramid. This is where people begin to participate regular in a specific activity for enjoyment (clubs/ gym) Opportunities in Sport Opportunities in Sport Q. Explain what Performance means in the participation pyramid and where it is? A. 3rd stage of the pyramid. This is where people begin to concentrate on sport specific skills, play for a team/club- competing regularly Q. Explain what Excellence means in the participation pyramid and where it is? A. Top of the pyramid. This is where people reach sporting excellence, become elite. Playing for country/ national squads.

Q. Can you identify the 6 factors that affect an individuals involvement in physical activity? (CHIRPS) A. Cultural/ Health & Well being/ Image/ Resources/ People/Socio-Economic. Q. Explain why it is important for the bottom of the performance pyramid to be successful? A. The more people getting involved in sport, the wider the base and therefore more people moving up through the pyramid, more to chose from to get to Elite. Opportunities in Sport Opportunities in Sport Q. Resources can affect a persons influence on sport, Can you explain what this means? A. Facilities available/location/ accessibility/Time. Q. Cultural factors can affect a persons influence on sport, Can you explain what this means and can involve? A. Disability (access to sport)/ Age (age restrictions) /Gender (more male or female dominated sports) /Race (ethnic backgrounds)

Q. Socio- economic being can affect a persons influence on sport, Can you explain what this means? Cost- can people afford to take part, buy equipment/ pay for facilities/ fees. Status- employed/student/ sports they chose. Q. Health and Well being can affect a persons influence on sport, Can you explain what this means? A. Illness and health problems (Asthma)
