Health has three aspect Physical health mental/emotional health Social health Wellness – an approach to life that emphasizes taking positive steps toward overall good health

Taking care of your body Nutrition – eat the right foods to maintain a healthy body Physical activity – exercise Look and feel healthier Have greater strength and endurance Maintain an appropriate weight Manage stress effectively Feel more alert Rest – a good nights sleep Hygiene – personal appearance Medical care – regular checkup’s (dental, eye, physical)

People who are mentally and emotionally healthy think clearly, feel good about themselves and are able to cope with the demands of life. Learn new information and skills Put your talents and abilities to good use Learn from your mistakes Focus on your strengths Take responsibility for your actions Be open-minded and flexible Develop positive ways to handle your emotions

Concerns the relationships to those around you. Family Friends Neighbors Teachers Classmates Your ability to communicate and be involved in your community can boost your wellness

Stress – body’s response when you feel overwhelmed by responsibilities and demands. The key to dealing with stress is to learn how to manage it effectively.

When the demands of life exceed your ability to cope with them. Not all stress is bad The stress during an athletic game The stress during a choir recital The stress before a presentation or test It will help you to do your best

At your table identify stressful situations for: A freshman in high school New employees Engaged couples Senior nearing graduation

Roles – the parts you play when you interact with others. Brother/sister Son/daughter Niece/nephew Teacher/student Each role bring responsibility Good management skills will help. Time management Communications skills

Learn what helps you to relieve and manage stress Get moving Make time for yourself Talk to someone Plan ahead Be realistic Learn from experience Learn to say “no”

In groups develop a ten question survey asking teens how they cope with stress

Taking responsibility for you health also includes assuming responsibility for your safety. Be aware of the risks Be prepared Stay within your limits Follow the rules

Wear a seatbelt Follow traffic laws Never mix alcohol and vehicles Stay focused Drive defensively Defensive driving – take steps to minimize the chances of an accident

It’s easy to assume that nothing will happen to you, however, life happens. Avoid behaviors that increase the odds of something that will happen. Abstinence – refusing to engage in high-risk behavior

Identify three specific things you already do, or plan to do, to show respect for yourself. What are some resources in the community that help teenagers with questions regarding their wellbeing?
