Advantages of Scorch over simple playback Anybody can use it with any computer. Free Scorch plug-in allows use without owning Sibelius. Flexibility of Tempo Flexibility of Transposition or Key Exercises and patterns can be posted on a web page and downloaded, or e-mailed to students. Anything you can create in Sibelius can be turned into a Scorch file. SCORCH

Ways to use Scorch Jazz Exercises and Patterns II V I: Exercise can be used as a scale exercise and improvisation exercise, etc. You can transpose it to any key. You may wish to add an accompaniment. http://lfa.atu.edu/music/howe/IIVIexercise.htm Scale Review: Start it slow and change the speed in Scorch to work on Dorian and Mixolydian modes (scales). SCORCH file

Improvisation Create an accompaniment for any set of changes in Sibelius and export it as Scorch. Students can download the file and play the head and improvise as well. Change to a slower speed for fast bop charts until they can keep up with the changes and the head. Students can transpose the file into any key. Example: “ Billie ’ s Bounce ” http://lfa.atu.edu/music/howe/bbchanges.htm SCORCH file

Woodshedding Difficult Ensemble Passages Difficult ensemble passages can be put in Sibelius and saved as a Scorch file. Students can play along gradually increasing the speed. Rhythmic and pitch accuracy can be improved. Example: mm 88-114 from Gordon Goodwin ’ s “ A Few Good Men ” http://lfa.atu.edu/music/howe/fewgoodmenwoodshed.htm SCORCH file

SCORCH Discussion… Thank You!

SCORCH EXTRA FUN: You can save your work as a MIDI file. (.mid) You can drag that MIDI file to iTunes (I drag to a playlist - easier to find the new song) (note the name is same as masthead) Select Advanced > Convert to MP3. Now you can burn to CD or put on an iPod or use as a ringtone. It is nice to have options.

SCORCH More Examples Easy two-part exercises - GoGo Guitar Etude - GoGo Note “substitute instrument” option Easy solo with piano - GoGo Woodwind trio - GoGo TECH Students - “If You’re Happy..” GoGo Note “Save as a Sibelius file” option Solfege - GoGo

Or offer it for no charge. You can even include your biography, photograph, contact details and list of scores on your own page on the site. http://www.sibeliusmusic.com/

SCORCH From your own website, anyone, anywhere can view, play, transpose and print your music, if you wish. Visitors to your site don’t need Sibelius, they just download Scorch, (Sibelius' free plug-in for browsing scores online). You can also let people save music from your site onto disk, useful for giving coursework to students.
