Define adjective. Write three sentences using a different adjective in each sentence.

Adjectives can tell: What kind? Ex: The leprechaun picked green shamrocks. Which one? Ex: The leprechaun picked those shamrocks. How many? Ex: The leprechaun picked several shamrocks. How much? Ex: The leprechaun picked enough shamrocks.

5 Soul Surfer is a great book about Bethany Hamilton!
In the following sentences, underline the adjectives. Draw an arrow to the noun or pronoun each modifies (describes). There may be more than one adjective in a sentence. Soul Surfer is a great book about Bethany Hamilton! This girl has more courage than most people. Bethany’s left arm was lost after a tiger shark attacked her. She has been an inspiration to many people.

6 Review: What is a predicate adjective?

10 If a phrase acts as a SINGLE part of speech, what part of speech can a prepositional phrase act as?
A prepositional phrase acts as an ADJECTIVE or an ADVERB. A prepositional phrase that modifies (describes) a noun or a pronoun is called an adjective phrase.

11 The Adjective Phrase An adjective phrase tells what kind or which one.
An adjective phrase almost always FOLLOWS the word it modifies. One of my friends showed me a book about a shark attack. Of my friends modifies the pronoun One, telling which one. About a shark attack modifies the noun book, telling what kind.

12 The Adjective Phrase Sometimes an adjective phrase modifies the object of another preposition. One of my friends in this class showed me the book. Of my friends modifies the pronoun One. In this class modifies the object of the preposition friends.

13 The Adjective Phrase More than one adjective phrase can modify the same word. The book describes the determination of Bethany after her attack. Of Bethany and after her attack both modify the noun determination.

14 The Adjective Phrase Be careful!! Sometimes an adjective phrase is combined with a noun to make a compound noun. Examples: United States of America tug-of-war jack-in-the-box

15 Practice: Underline the adjective phrase in each sentence. Then draw an arrow to the noun or pronoun that it modifies (describes). The attack by the shark was terrible. Everyone in addition to Bethany was shocked. One of her friends was extremely supportive. The girl next to Bethany in the picture is her friend. It was a great book about determination.

16 Practice: Put a box around the linking verbs. Then circle the predicate adjectives. Not every sentence has one! The attack by the shark was terrible. Everyone in addition to Bethany was shocked. One of her friends was extremely supportive. The girl next to Bethany in the picture is her friend. It was a great book about determination.
