About the Speaker, Pete Leibman President, Idealize Enterprises – Blog: careermuscles.wordpress.com Created Washington Wizards Sports Career Day 3 time #1 NBA Salesperson of the year Phi Beta Kappa from The John Hopkins University

Pete’s Opening Comments 60-70% of jobs are filled via personal contacts while <5% of jobs are obtained through job boards Networking is a process of building mutually beneficial relationships to better your career and your life Pete’s “lemonade principle”: When you are excited about something you exude passion which will inspire others to help you for the same reasons one buys a $1 cup of lemonade from a child’s lemonade stand when not even thirsty

WHY Networking is the Best Job Search Strategy 1.Employers fear hiring the wrong person. They look for candidates they know or are endorsed by folks they know. 2.Employers have less time and money to find talent. 3.Job seekers will find hidden jobs with less competition through networking. 80% of jobs are not advertised. 4.Job seekers who network stand out when there is competition. 5.Job seekers can bypass bouncers (HR systems/screens, etc) and cut in the back door by networking. 6.Networking makes interviewing easier.

How to begin the Networking process LOOK FOR PEOPLE, NOT JOBS FOCUS first. If you do not tell others what Industry and/or Function you seek, they cannot help you. Ideally, having a list of companies you would like to work for would also help. CONNECT with those people doing the work you want to do. They can help you find opportunities within their industry/function/company.

Three Paths to Networking First Connection – a person you already know from your personal, professional, or academic connections. Establish relationships with these people on LinkedIn. 2 nd Connection – someone connected to someone you already know. Ask your first connections for introductions to these people and then ask them for advice, not jobs. LinkedIn provides an excellent venue for doing this. Go Direct – fish where the big fish are hanging out. Find connections at events, conferences, trade associations, etc, as relevant to your field of interest. Be enthusiastic and professional and ask for advice not jobs with confidence. Think “pay it forward.”

Three Best Websites for Networking LinkedIn – www.linkedin.comwww.linkedin.com – Use the Search feature to find Groups to join – Perform Company Search to find 2 nd connections – Seek Introductions through 1 st connections by scrolling through their list of contacts Jigsaw.com – Jigsaw is the world's largest database of up-to-date, downloadable, and complete contact and company information with a directory of more than 22 million business contacts and over 36,000 contacts added and edited daily. Google – Look for associations, events and conferences where professionals hang out that could be good networking resources for your search

Two Secrets to Success in Networking Proper expectations will destroy your fears of having a conversation. Preparation destroys your fears of lack of experience. – Careermuscles.wordpress.com = Pete’s blog has lots of good tips and open-ended questions to use when networking

Benefits and Drawbacks of Social Networking Benefits: – Online branding opportunities – Research – Ability to find and make new connections Drawbacks: – Online Brand could eliminate you from consideration – Unrealistic Expectations – Not “live” or in person
