3. THE UMAYYADS : WITH MANY CONQUESTS, COMES GREAT STRUGGLE Umayyad Dynasty was created by a caliph named Mu’awiyah (MOO-UH-wee-uh) in 661 AD. Umayyad conquests were set into motion starting with North Africa. The Umayyads then occupied and conquered most of Spain in 725 AD. The Islamic expansion in Europe came to halt when the Muslim were defeated at the Battle of Tours
