Math Field Trip Student Question Go to the lower soccer field. Run across and back the soccer field (long ways). How long did it take you in seconds? Mom/Dad is to run across and back the soccer field (long ways). How long did it take him/her in seconds? Who took longer to run across and back? By how much longer? Why was seconds used as the unit of measurement rather than minutes? Parent Hand Out Questions to ask: How can we time ourselves running across and back the soccer field? If your child says by counting, then discuss the pros and cons of this method. Question the child on how to acquire a more accurate way of how to time this activity. Encourage your child to label his/her answers with the units (in this case, seconds). Ask your child: Is it is important to label the answer with the appropriate units? Exaggeration here might work. What if used hours for our units? Would the answer make sense? Discuss unit of measurement. 60 seconds is 1 minute. Why were seconds used as the unit of measurement rather than minutes?

Math Field Trip Count the number of stairs that go from the first floor to the second floor. Is this number even or odd? Find the following shapes around school. List the object where the shape was found. triangle square rectangle pentagon hexagon (6 sides) octagon

Election Activity MCTM Bulletin October 2008 Page 4 Electing a President A president takes the oath of office in January (following the November election). William Harrison died after only a month in office. What month did William Harrison die? Zachary Taylor died after 16 months in office. What month did Zachary Taylor die?

More Election Activity Abraham Lincoln was the tallest president at six feet four inches and James Madison was the smallest president at five feet four inches. Are you closer in height to the shortest or tallest president? How many inches do you have to grow to be as tall as that president? Is your mom or dad closest in height to the shortest or tallest president?
34
Election Activity Continued Approximately 50% of all people in the United States over 18 years old vote when it is time to elect a president. If 50% of the students here tonight voted, how many people would that equal? If 75% of all the people here tonight voted, how many people would that equal? Which percent was easy or difficult to work with and why?

“Often, when my third graders were working on similar concepts in the classroom, the "Math Clubbers" would offer what they had learned after school. It would help make our more mundane class work come alive in a different, exciting way!” “I also saw some of my students develop more confidence in their Math abilities. That self-confidence is priceless!” -Third Grade Teacher

Parent Story “I asked how math club was as we were walking out. He was strolling along and then stopped and said fine except there is one problem. Thinking it would be more serious I was readying myself for a math is in everything response. He said, the problem is it is only once a month! Shook his head and started to walk out. I had to laugh and said I couldn't agree more.”
