HOW THE BODY WORKS Mònica Pareja Nieto CEIP Miquel Martí i Pol (Barberà del Vallès)

HUMAN BODY Although we may look quiet on the outside, our body is constantly moving and changing inside. What parts of our bodies are involved when doing exercise? The heart The lungs The blood The muscles The bones...

THE HEART Our heart is made of muscle. It pumps blood around our bodies. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the parts of the body that need it. Why does our heart beat faster when doing exercise?

THE LUNGS Our lungs receive the air we breathe in through the nose. From the air, the blood take the oxygen. Blood carries the oxygen to all the organs in the body including the muscles. Why do we breathe faster when doing exercise?

THE CIRCULATION carbon dioxide arrives at the lungs 6. The carbon dioxide arrives at the lungs and we expel it through the mouth or nose. right part of the heart our lungs oxygen. 1. The right part of the heart pumps blood to our lungs. The blood picks up oxygen. to the left part of the heart. 2. The blood carrying oxygen travels back to the left part of the heart. carbon dioxide. 4. The body use the oxygen for moving, and it makes carbon dioxide. all the other parts of the body oxygen 3. The heart pumps the blood to all the other parts of the body, the brain and all the muscles. The blood delivers oxygen to them all. to the right part of the heart 5. It is carried away by the blood to the right part of the heart. It pumps the blood to the lungs.

THE MUSCLES The muscles in our body are very important - they enable us to stand up, sit down and move around. Our muscles need nutrients from food and oxygen to work properly. When doing exercise muscles work harder and need more supply of oxygen

When we exercise... need an increased blood supply heart beats faster Our muscles need an increased blood supply (more oxygen and nutrients) so our heart beats faster to make it arrive quicker. pulse rate recovery time. The pulse rate measures the beats of our heart. The time we need for the pulse rate to return to normal after exercise is our recovery time. breathe faster expel the carbon dioxide We also breathe faster - to get more oxygen into our lungs that is sent to the muscles through the blood. Lungs also expel the carbon dioxide through the mouth or nose. hot We also get hot and sometimes flushed (or red faced) because of the effort.
