STRUCTURE & FUNCTION Oxygen Transportation

MUSCLE MOVEMENT NEED OXYGEN TO WORK WORK BETTER WHEN WARM WORK IN PAIRS (CONTRACT OR RELAX) MUSCLE- TENDON- MOVEMENT

OXYGEN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM HEART & HEART RATE LUNGS BLOOD CARBON DIOXIDE & LACTIC ACID

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

OXYGEN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM When you breathe in, oxygen enters your lungs and is absorbed into your blood. The oxygenated blood is pumped around the body by the heart.

OXYGEN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM The muscles in your body use the oxygenated blood as ‘food’. The deoxygenated blood travels back to the lungs to receive more oxygen, then the cycle starts again.

Different Oxygen Intake Increases the size of the heart The size of your lungs will increase Your lung capacity will increase

Benefits of improving the Oxygen Transportation System Lowers you resting heart rate (The lower you resting heart rate the fitter you are) After exercise the fitter you are the faster your pulse will return to the starting level

Waste Products Produced Exercising for a long period of time causes a build up of lactic acid in your muscles. Lactic acid causes you to slow down and your muscles will fatigue, you may even experience cramp.

Waste Products Produced As you exercise a waste product known as Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) is produced. When you breathe out the carbon dioxide leaves your body.

Questions Which of the following statements are true or false True False (i)The heart takes longer to return to its normal resting rate after exercise. (i)The heart becomes larger. (ii)More air can be taken into the lungs with each breath. (i)The lungs become smaller

Questions The body requires a constant supply of oxygen to function. (i)Describe why the body needs more oxygen when we start to warm up. _____________________________________ ___________________________________ (ii)Describe how the body increases the amount of oxygen that is taken into the body. _____________________________________ ___________________________________ (iii)Describe how the body transports this oxygen. _____________________________________ ___________________________________

Questions Explain why you need to warm down? _____________________________ _____________________________ _____________________________ What would your warm down involve? _____________________________ _____________________________ _____________________________
