COMPLETE THE SHEETS ON YOUR DESK - NOW

Gas exchange in an Alveoli

Respiration -release of energy from food, in our cells Breathing -movement of air into and out of body Gas exchange -movement of O 2 and CO 2 in and out of blood

Once O 2 is in our blood what happens to it next?

What changes occur in your body when you run? ?

Respiration The release of energy from our food. SO…what is happening when we run? Glucose + oxygen Carbon dioxidewater Glucose + oxygen Carbon dioxide + water + ENERGY from digested starch from breathing + gas exchange 1) BREATHING INCREASES to get more oxygen into blood 2)HEART RATE INCREASES to pump oxygen in the blood to the CELLS faster … … SO RESPIRATION IS FASTER

Circulation 1) Blood gets pumped from the heart to the lungs and picks up oxygen 2) The blood is then taken back to the heart… 3) The heart pumps the blood to the intestine (where glucose is added and oxygen used)… 4) … and to the rest of the body (where glucose and oxygen are removed) 5) After the oxygen and glucose have been removed for respiration the blood is sent back to the heart and the circuit starts again Why does the box change colour? Why?

Blood around body

The Circulatory System This is the system which carries the dissolved food and oxygen around the body. This includes the heart and the lungs.

The Circulatory system The circulatory system pumps ______ around the body. We need blood to be taken around the body because it carries ________ and _______. These are needed so that all the ____ in our bodies can release _____ through _________. The blood also carries the waste product ______ ______ back to the lungs to get rid of it, because too much is ______ and damages the cells. The main organs in the circulatory system are the _____ and the ______. energy, heart, blood, glucose, respiration, carbon dioxide, oxygen, acidic, cells, lungs

Once O 2 goes into our blood at the lungs what happens to it next? Circulated around body by the heart

The Heart The heart is made of very special muscle called CARDIAC muscle. It must keep beating all the time for the rest of a persons life! If you tried to do the same action repeatedly (like the heart) your muscles would get tired and, after a while, they would stop working.

The Heart – label your diagram

HOMEWORK A minute in the life of a red blood cell

GLUCOSE OXYGEN + from digestion of starch from breathing + gas exchange WATER CARBON DIOXIDE++ ENERGY Used by body + released as HEAT waste product- exhaled/ex creted waste product - exhaled Respiration - Summary This is called ‘Aerobic’ Respiration as it uses ______ from the air

When we exercise: Respiration is ______ to release more ______. This uses up more g________. Breathing is _______ and __________ to get more _______ into the body and _____ out. Heart beat is ________ to get______ to and from ______ and cells faster. When we sleep respiration is _______ because we need much less e_______. This means breathing is _______, and heart beat is _______.

When we exercise: Respiration is increased to release more energy. This uses up more glucose. Breathing is faster and deeper to get more oxygen into the body and carbon dioxide out. Heart beat is increased to get blood to and from the lungs and cells faster. When we sleep respiration is reduced because we need much less energy. This means breathing is slower and shallower and heart beat is decreased.
