1 LESSON 10: ROOTS –VERT- AND –VERS- HONORS ENGLISH I VOCABULARY

2 VERT AND VERS Derived from the Latin words verter and verser, meaning “to turn,” the word elements vert and vers occur in many English words.

3 AVERT (Trans Verb) a. To turn away or aside. b. To prevent from happening Example: Sandra averted her eyes during the frightening parts of the horror movie

4 DIVERSIFY (Trans Verb) a. To give variety to; vary b. To extend (activities) into distinct field (Intransitive Verb) To spread out activities or investments, as a business. Example: The restaurant diversified the menu by adding some new beef and chicken dishes.

5 DIVERSION (noun) a.Something that relaxes or entertains; recreation. b.The act of turning aside from a course or direction. c.The act of drawing the attention from one thing to another. Example: Going for a walk was a welcome diversion after long hours of studying.

6 INADVERTENT (adjective) a. Accidental; unintentional. b. Not duly attentive. Example: Henry’s inadvertent omission of his signature caused the bank teller to refuse his check.

7 INCONTROVERTIBLE (adjective) Indisputable; unquestionable. Example: The incontrovertible evidence caused the jury to find the defendant guilty.

8 INVERT (Trans. Verb) a. To turn inside out or upside down. b. To reverse the position, order, or condition of. Example: If you invert a glass filled with water, the liquid will spill out.

9 IRREVERSIBLE (Intransitive Verb) Incapable of being reversed. Example: The damp weather caused irreversible damage to the paintings.

10 REVERT (Intransitive Verb) To return to a former condition, practice, or belief. Example: When they were frightened, the children reverted to babyish behavior.

11 VERSATILE (adjective) a. Capable of doing many things competently. b. Having varied uses or functions. Example: The versatile mechanic was able to discover and correct any kind of car problem.

12 VERTIGO (noun) The sensation of dizziness and the feeling that oneself or one’s environment is whirling about. Example: When Harvey stood on the high bridge and glanced at the water below, he began to experience vertigo.
