Global Warming Till Elementary Tom Ziencina

2 Global Warming To the students:
You are about to embark on an environmental journey. Human beings have made great advancements in technology and in improving our standard of life. Along with this we have created new problems such as Global Warming. We will be viewing a movie called “An Inconvenient Truth” to open our eyes to Global Warming. We will also do experiments on this topic and as scientists try to come up with ideas to combat this problem.

3 Questions about Global Warming
How real is it? How soon will the effects of global warming happen? What can we do about it?

4 The Unit Students viewed Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth.

5 W L K The weather is changing.
Why am I just now hearing about global warming? Number Category 4 & 5 hurricanes have practically doubled in the last 30 years. What can it do to the climate? The 10 hottest years have been in the last 14 years. Can it affect my life? The flow of ice glaciers in Greenland has more than doubled over the past decade. Could we get flooded by water? At least 279 species of plants and animals are already responding to global warming. Could we die because of too much heat? If we have global warming, heat waves will be more frequent and more intense. What are the effects of global warming? The percentage of people that depend on glacial melt for their drinking water is 40%. What will happen to animals like the polar bear? As the water temperature under a hurricane increases it causes stronger storms. Is the climate warming because of Global Warming? The only two nations that haven’t signed on to the Kyoto Protocol is the U.S and Australia. What might happen to the earth because of Global Warming? The greenhouse effect helps to regulate the temperature planet. What can we do to save our earth from it?

6 Global Warming Poem Global warming isn’t hard to explain.
It leaves the earth crying. With lots of pain. It hurts our planet in every single way. The changes could leave us in a very sorrow way. We need to stop it so the temperature won’t rise. We need to work together so our future can rise.

7 Global Warming Poster Students created posters about global warming.

8 Dear Barack Obama: The school that I attend is Emmett Till Math and Science Academy. The school is located in Chicago, IL and we are doing a project on Global Warming. I would like to ask you some questions on that topic. For example: What is your view on global warming? How do you feel about what Al Gore is doing? How do you feel about the U.S. being one of the only countries that has not signed the Treaty? We know that you are running for President in What do you plan to do about the question of the environment? Please respond to my questions in a letter. Send your letter to Emmett Till Math and Science Academy at 6543 S Champlain in Chicago, IL Sincerely, Julius Stoakley

9 Global Warming Experiment
Students work on global warming experiment. Do carbon dioxide molecules trap more heat than regular air molecules?

10 Global Warming Experiment

11 Global Warming Debate Students debate issues on global warming.
What are your feelings about global warming? How do you explain all the category type 4 and 5 hurricanes? What can we do about it?

12 Dear George Bush Dear George W. Bush,
This is your last year as our president of the United States, am I right? Well that’s a good thing to hear, because we all know you really didn’t do anything to help America. Basically, all you did was risk the lives of many Americans. I am pretty sure that you are aware of Global Warming. Well let me refresh your memory just in case you forgot. Due to Global Warming the weather has been “off the charts.” The hottest years on this earth have been the past 14 years. For some reason water has been disappearing from lakes and rivers. Also scientists think that because of Global Warming there will be more hurricanes. Diseases have gotten worse, and some are incurable. The glaciers in the Appellations Mountains are also melting. The last thing we need is another disaster like Hurricane Katrina, so I would like to know what you are going to do about it, Mr. President. Sincerely, A Concerned Citizen

13 Public Service Announcement
Global warming is a very important issue in America today. Many corporations are trying to keep this issue a secret. The oil companies are especially to blame, because they know that when their products are burned they produce large amounts of CO2, and they are trying to keep it a secret. Global warming is the main cause in the rise in temperature. It is caused by carbon dioxide (CO2). People make CO2 when they breathe, burn things, and drive cars. It’s the same as if you left a dark color car in the sun for an hour or so. Because of the glass the sun rays can come in but they can’t leave, and that is why when you come back to the car it is very hot inside. The earth’s atmosphere acts the same way, it allows the earth’s rays to enter, but because of green house gases they can’t leave. This causes the earth’s temperature to rise. Many of the earth’s important resources are being depleted because of the rise in the earth’s temperature. For example, Lake Chad, in Africa, one of the earths largest land lakes, is completely dried up. We can help to stop this natural disaster by changing our regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. This will save about 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. We can also plant trees. A single tree can absorb a ton of CO2 over its lifetime. In addition by simply turning off electric appliances when we’re not using them we can save a thousand pounds of CO2 a year. So why not save our earth, it that easy. Don’t be part of the problem. Be part of the solution. By: Jillian Railey
