2 What is romanticism? What is realism? Romanticism: Literature characterized by a heightened interest in nature, emphasis on the individual's expression of emotion and imagination, departure from the attitudes and forms of classicism, and rebellion against established social rules and conventions. Realism: The representation in art or literature of objects, actions, or social conditions as they actually are, without idealization or presentation in abstract form. In this case we are studying realism in literature.

3 Elements of Realism Characterization ● Realistic Character ○ Reflect individuals who possess routine and ordinary lives ● Motivated by changes in persona ● Dialogue is individualized ○ Displays the character’s class, education, gender and personality Features within the Writing ● The plotline strengthens characterization within the literature ● No use of idealization ● Setting involves the natural world and is true to time period ● Written with a sense of veracity ● Events within the plotline occur in chronological order Literary Techniques ● Incorporates illusion into reality through details in setting ● Verisimilitude ○ appearance of being real or true

4 Elements of Romanticism Character Characteristics: ● Static ● Metaphoric names ● Dominated by singular passions ● They stand out, especially with their physical appearance Writing Characteristics: ● Mainly based upon idealization ● Limited information given to readers ● All details are important to the storyline and plot ● Exotic settings ● Ending is happy ● Reordered events make the chronology confusing Literary Characteristics: ● Has hyperbolization (in order to depict idealness) ● Represented ideas through metaphoric means
