1990s Systems Management Operating Environment Desktop UNIX Consider the state of Systems Management in the 1990s. It was the decade of the desktop, the rise of Windows to dominance on the desktop and emergence on the server, with the server room dominated by UNIX. With rapid growth of IT infrastructures, most organizations were focused on deployment and maintenance of systems while resolving problems as they arose. The most common solution was Sneaker Net wherein IT staff addressed issues via desk side visit. Remote Control tools such as pcAnywhere grew to prominence to reduce the need for costly desktop visits and Imaging tools such as Ghost and Deployment Solution emerged to address imaging: one of the most expensive IT tasks. Desktop Operating Environment Laptop UNIX Linux The 2000s saw a vast diversification of operating systems and hardware platforms. Windows spread beyond the desktop to a major player in the data center. UNIX still maintains a strong position in the data center with Linux taking a strong and growing role. Laptops overtook desktops as the major client platform with Mac reemerging from niche status. Finally virtualization rules the datacenter thanks to VMWare. With the breadth of new platforms and services, many new challenges arose for IT. Deployment, configuration, and problem resolution continued to be major initiatives for the operations team along with asset management, and the various aspects of software management: packaging, delivery, patching, etc. With the various challenges came numerous point products. Symantec was an innovator in integrating and consolidating different point products into suites to address specific needs around client, server, and asset management. Desktop Operating Environment Laptop UNIX Linux Challenges Looking ahead, organizations can expect the demands of managing an increasingly diverse environment as they have in recent years. The release of Windows 7 presents a significant event as many organizations skipped Windows Vista and have been managing a predominately Windows XP environment for nearly a decade. The skills of mass rollouts and migrations will need sharpening as Windows 7 is adopted. On top of the existing challenges of the 2000s, there are large challenges of fixed or reduced budgets, demands for improved service levels, and a complex threat environment. IT organizations will need to become more strategic to align their efforts with the objectives of the overall business. With that in mind, point solutions, and even complex suites are not enough to tackle these complex problems. They will continue to be the building blocks for more strategic tools that solve complex problems. 5 Standardize, Automate, And Consolidate Operations
IT Management Suite is compromised of four focal areas: Server Management, Client Management, ServiceDesk and IT Asset Management. Our Server Management capabilities support not only the Windows operating system, but also UNIX and Linux. In addition, we apply the same management disciplines to both physical and virtual systems as well (this includes both Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware). Similarly, our Client Management capabilities support Windows and a growing number of other platforms – including Mac OS X and Linux operating systems. Combined our client and server management products form the underpinning of our configuration management capabilities. We recently re-launched our helpdesk capabilities with a full featured ServiceDesk solution. This product provides the necessary components for any ITIL based service management initiative and covers key functions, such as incident and problem management, change management, self service options and service catalog. Rounding out our features is IT Asset Management that builds upon our solid inventory foundations from configuration management. IT Asset extends our capabilities to include both discoverable and non-discoverable assets, managing software and hardware contracts, maximizing investments and building out the configuration items in our CMDB for effective change management. What sets our solutions apart is that all of these features are managed through a central console that is supported by a common platform, Symantec Management platform. This integration allows us to integrate management functions to accelerate automation for better service, value and IT efficiency. Recent Anecdotes/Customer Stories Based on a recent Forrester report, Mac OS X and Linux OS only represent 5% of most corporate environments. However 2% of respondents to a recent Forrester poll indicated they were investigating moving to Mac or Linux during their Windows 7 migration.
