Biggest Challenges in Data Protection
What is my data growth rate? How can I control costs and justify new expenditures? How do I report on my heterogeneous environment? Growth Am I meeting my backup and recovery SLAs? How can I increase efficiencies within my backup and recovery infrastructure? Performance Can I recover all my data? Can I recover w/in my Recovery Time Objective? What is my Recovery Point Exposure? Recoverability How secure are my backup tapes going offsite? How do I protect my remote offices? Can I prove our backup service levels are compliant? Security and Compliance Veritas NetBackup

NetBackup: Protect and Manage Data
Reduce complexity Centralize & standardize Zero tape REMOTE OFFICE PROTECTION NetBackup PureDisk World-class leader Enterprise scalability Enhance with options Bare Metal Restore (BMR) Advanced Client Virtual Tape NetApp protection Encryption NetBackup 6.0 Enterprise Server DATA CENTER PROTECTION BUSINESS REPORTING & ANALYSIS Monitor/Manage Analyze/Report Operations Manager + NBU: Protect and Manage Data PureDisk We believe it provides the first enterprise solution to truly solve the thorny challenge of protecting data in remote offices More corporate data in remote offices than in the data center and many enterprises have 100’s, and sometimes even 1,000’s, of remote offices NBU PureDisk is a disk-based data protection product that allows companies to apply the same kind of maturity, reliability, and manageability that they already use for enterprise backup – and even use the same team – and apply it to solve the remote office backup problem So what’s so cool about NBU PD? You improve the reliability of remote office backup dramatically You take backup out of the hands of 100’s of different people who never wanted it to begin with – for them, it is literally hands-off backup You leverage the same experienced team and benefit from economies of scale for centralized hardware – that is handling backup for the corporate data center Data is encrypted throughout A very simple pricing model – per TB, after data reduction effect NetBackup With NBU 6.0 there are a host of new features and capabilities, including Enhanced BMR Significant enhancements to our Advanced Client for improved snapshotting Advanced capabilities to support virtual tape environments and NetApp storage environments New Media Server Encryption option Business reporting and analysis One of the most significant areas we put time into was in the area of management and reporting NBU 6.0 ships with a feature called NetBackup Operations Manager, which is our most advanced operational management tool ever And Veritas Backup Reporter is now part of the NetBackup family, providing tighter integration to provide business level reporting, trending, and analysis. Protecting the Data Center
Every Customer looks at storage tiering - they have high-end, mid-range and low-end storage vendor The objective is to put the appropriate application on the right tier of storage It’s a matter of economics - Midrange is about 20-50% cost of high-end storage Low-End is about 50% cost of mid-range storage Protecting the Data Center with Veritas NetBackup

Choice Of Encryption Points
Tape Drive/ Appliance Client Media Server L A N S A N NBU So the question shouldn’t be if to encrypt, but where. There are a variety of encryption technologies available and with that, a choice of where to encrypt data. Data can be encrypted at the source/client for highest security so data is protected in transit and in media Data can be encrypted at the media server for easier management, maximum flexibility, and increased performance by avoiding client impact Data can be encrypted at the tape drive or with a dedicated appliance for wire-speed performance Veritas NetBackup
11
NetBackup Encryption Solutions
Client Encryption Option Media Server Encryption Option Support for Tape Drive/ Appliance Tape Drive/ Appliance Client Media Server L A N S A N NBU NetBackup offers two software options for encryption – one that encrypts at the client called the Client Encryption Option (CEO), and one that encrypts at the media server (new) that is called Media Server Encryption Option (MSEO). Both CEO and MSEO are integrated into the NetBackup policy and does not require a dedicated hardware device or significant changes to the backup process. MSEO is a new addition and encrypts at the media server as opposed to the client, and includes selectable compression and encryption and “set it and forget it” key management. Because NetBackup provides heterogeneous hardware support, we also qualify encrypted tape drives and inline hardware devices to provide our customers with a wide array of options to best address their encryption requirements. Veritas NetBackup
12
NetBackup Encryption Advantage
Most Complete Secure data whether at the client or media server Support for hardware alternatives Lowest Cost to Buy and Operate Software options to seamlessly integrate with NetBackup and require no significant process change to existing backup or recovery processes Cost efficient data center solution scales without need of separate hardware encryption devices Data can be compressed prior to encryption reducing media consumption and storage costs Most Flexible Deployment and Recovery No special purpose hardware required Perfect for multiple DR locations and scenarios Veritas NetBackup

Veritas Backup Reporter
Introducing…… Veritas Backup Reporter Advanced backup reporting for visibility into backup/recovery operations Business-level reporting and analysis Centralized reporting across disparate backup applications Framework to provide context to backup reports Track Analyze Customize Introducing Veritas Backup Reporter – a new product to Symantec’s data protection family. Backup Reporter takes data that can otherwise be very complicated and potentially overwhelming and organizes, categorizes and presents the data in a very customizable fashion. Excellent for: Tracking backup service levels to ensure they are compliant and ensure costs are aligned with backup/recovery operations Analyzing historical information to see trends over time and be proactive about increasing efficiencies Customizing reports based on business requirements and intended audience Track backup job success against SLA parameters Relate backup infrastructure costs to business owners for chargeback Aggregate historical data to identify growth trends Monitor resource utilization and identify constraints Analyze risk and quantify exposure Customize data views–By line of business, by backup domain or by application Hierarchical view reporting with drill-down capability Veritas NetBackup 18

Veritas Backup Reporter Deployment
Veritas Backup Reporter Management Server (NetBackup, Backup Exec, CommVault, EMC NetWorker & IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) Database Backup Reporter Monitoring Host / NetBackup Remote Administrative Console The Backup Reporter Management Server includes a Sybase ASA database. The Management Server supports both Solaris and Windows. Data collection for NetBackup, BackupExec and CommVault is agentless. (note: local agent required for Legato and TSM). This means that no footprint is taken up on critical clients or servers which, in effect, “busy up” critical operations. Backup Reporter provides ONE centralized view across heterogeneous environments. The core product supports NetBackup and Backup Exec, but provides options for CommVault, EMC NetWorker and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager. Managed Backup Devices (client & servers) Veritas NetBackup 19

What is Success? Success and failure mean different things to different people…. Architect / IT Director Operations / Backup Admin Service Provider CIO Success calculation must consider several variables: Jobs/Attempts/Streams Exit Status Codes Policies Backup Window Success types Raw job Client Application Company assets are protected and I have the reports to prove it! Failures exempt from SLA are filtered out! Backup completed – but failed three times before doing so. I better look into this! Backups and restores are within SLA parameters Reporting solutions must accommodate different definitions of backup success and failure to address different audiences. Veritas NetBackup
24
