3
Agenda Introduction Monitoring Distributed Applications End User Perspective Monitoring Agentless Exception Monitoring Monitoring the Security Logs Monitoring Virtual Environment Cross Platform Monitoring & Interoperability Summary
4
IT Delivers Services; Not Servers Web Orders Application Linux Web Server Clients Middleware Virtual Machine Database Physical Network Web Orders Service
5
Monitoring Distributed Applications Today’s enterprise applications are complex and span across multiple computers IT departments have SLA with business on the availability of services SCOM 2007 can monitor the overall health of services by monitoring the various components such as applications and hardware
6
Monitoring Distributed Application Applications/component s that interact to provide a service to an end user Runs on many physical tiers - Scale out, over the internet, disparate networks Heterogeneous components - Legacy applications, Partner Web Services
7
Designing Distributed Applications Leverage Distributed Application Templates Design the top level logical components Capture what you know into the Model Component Groups Relationships It’s an iterative process, you can create/ remove/ update at anytime

10
End User Perspective Monitoring An understanding of “end user experience” is required to gain an accurate view of a service’s operation Synthetic transactions act like an end user of the service and report back the results The synthetic transaction results can be used for reporting or as an alert to possible service problems

Agentless Exception Monitoring Unreported issues can drive reduced uptime and security AEM enables collection, viewing and reporting of application and operating system crashes Allows Enterprises to manage flow of crash information Aggregates error data for reporting

18
Monitoring the Security Logs Windows security log is used for generating compliance reports and performing security analysis But all the events generated by Windows audit policies are stored in local computers Audit Collection Service (ACS) can extract and store Windows security logs for later analysis and reporting

Monitoring the Virtual Environment Separate virtual machine monitoring infrastructure add complexity to the IT environment Tight integration with applications would help resource optimization Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) feature in SCVMM 2008 can act upon the data provided by SCOM 2007

Cross Platform Monitoring & Interoperability Organizations need end-to- end visibility into the health and performance of IT infrastructure Often this infrastructure is comprised of a complex mix of different operating systems SCOM 2007 Cross Platform Extensions allow monitoring of Linux & Unix systems SCOM 2007 connectors for HP Openview & IBM Tivoli allows interoperability
