Artistic renaissance Compare and contrast the Italian renaissance and the northern renaissance. Use specific examples from artist’s works.

Early Italian renaissance masters
Giotto- 14th century artist who began the naturalist movement (imitate nature perfectly). Masaccio- Next artist credited with continuing the naturalist idea of art. Botticelli- Often influenced by Greek and Roman mythology as seen in Primavera. Donatello- Florentine sculptor also influenced by Greeks and Romans. Brunelleschi- Architect that used Roman antiquity to create building under a Medici commission. Francesca- Portrait artist of duke and duchess of Urbino that showed artists true ability to accurately depict subjects.

The big three of the high renaissance: (rome centered) Leonardo da vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo.

Da vinci ( ) True Renaissance man: Painter, inventor, scientist, etc. Naturalism mixed with realistic emotion with excellence in dimensions characterize his works. Most famous works include Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and his sketch of man.

Raphael (1483-1520) Acclaimed painter.
Often portrayed religion and or Greek themes in frescoes in the Vatican. Most famous work is School of Athens.

Michelangelo (1475-1564) Painter, sculptor and architect.
Works idealized man in perfect proportion as seen in the Sistine Chapel (Adam) and his sculpture of David.

Northern renaissance artists
Jan van Eyck ( ) From Flanders (Belgium) Work was to imitate as observed. Albrecht Durer ( ) From Nuremberg Tried to combine Northern techniques with Italian skill such as laws of perspective and proportion.
