Wednesday, September 11th, 2019 Common Core Standards: L and SL Aim: How can we analyze the author’s message (theme) and the purpose of other literary devices in “Three Questions” (Tolstoy)? Do Now: Choose one of the following questions to answer. 1.) What was your favorite part of the “Three Questions” story and why? (You may refer to a literary device, author’s message or event) 2.) What essay question could you compose for the ”Three Questions”? Begin with “In a well-constructed essay, analyze how the author…” Objective: Students will be able to analyze the author’s message and understand the purpose of other literary devices.

Wednesday, September 11th, 2019 Aim: How can we analyze the author’s message (theme) and the purpose of other literary devices in “Three Questions” (Tolstoy)? Objective: Students will be able to analyze the author’s message and understand the purpose of other literary devices. Agenda A.) Do Now: Answer the Do Now. Turn and talk with your tablemates. Choose a captain to represent the table. Captains will prepare to share their tablemates’ answers with the whole class. B.) Discuss/Share: -Captains will share Do Now answers. C.) Class Discussion: Using your annotations on the “Three Questions” story, share your answers the following questions: What are the main events of the plot of “Three Questions”? This includes the exposition (introductory event), the rising action, the climax, falling action and the resolution. What are the conflicts? How can you characterize the characters? What’s the setting? What other literary devices does the author employ (use)? What’s the author’s purpose for any of these literary devices? What’s the author’s message (theme)? If you were to answer “SO WHAT?” for all of these questions, what would you answer? D.) Q & A/Reflections: What were your overall impressions of ”Three Questions”? How can the author’s message be applicable to your life?
