3 What were those again? Share w/ group some of your unhealthy habits
Determine which of those habits might have long term implications on cardiovascular health?

4 If 84% are preventable… And there are risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD)… What risk factors are preventable? Example: Heredity is not Which factors contribute the most to the development of CHD?

5 Risk Factors for CHD More significant High cholesterol
Sedentary lifestyle Smoking Hypertension (High BP) Diabetes Heredity Excessive body fat Tension/stress Self assessment – p. 275 Less significant

6 Cholesterol LDL – bad HDL – good
To decrease, diet low in saturated fat & cholesterol, more fiber & soy, more activity See p. 286 HDL – good To increase, more aerobic exercise, don’t smoke, weight loss Those with higher cholesterol but more fit have a lower risk of mortality

7 Increasing Activity Accumulation of activity over the day
30 minutes of aerobic nearly every day Make activity a regular part of daily life Stairs, walk/bike to school / work / store… Activity… Lowers resting HR, decreases BP, reduces body fat, lowers blood lipids, increases HDL’s, alleviates tension/stress

8 Hypertension Anything above 140/90 – increases the risk for disease & premature death Treatment- for 90% of those w/ HBP Aerobic exercise, weight reduction, low-salt & low-fat diet, high potassium/high calcium diet, low alcohol & caffeine intake, not smoking, stress mgmt, & medication; see p. 293 Those with HBP but who are active have a lower risk of mortality than those with normal BP but inactive

9 Diabetes More than 80% of diabetics die from CV disease.
Blood glucose can’t enter cells because Pancreas stops producing insulin (Type I) Cells develop insulin resistance (Type II) Adult onset…….not anymore! More than 80% of Type II diabetics are overweight Related to overeating, obesity & inactivity Prevention or Treatment Special diet, weight loss, regular activity program
