A Program Advisor has thorough knowledge of a degree program. Your Program Advisor can help you ensure that you are following the requirements and structure of your degree program. You should contact your Program Advisor if you have any administrative enquiries about your degree. 5 Program Advisor and Student Advisor
Course Coordinator A  Course Coordinator is responsible for organising one or more individual courses (subjects). You will have a different Course Coordinator for each course you are enrolled in, and examples of areas for which they are responsible include course content, adverse circumstances, and grades. Program Advisor and Student Advisor A Program Advisor has thorough knowledge of a degree program. Your Program Advisor can help you ensure that you are following the requirements and structure of your degree program. You should contact your Program Advisor if you have any administrative enquiries about your degree. Student Advisors are part of the Student Advice Team and are located in Student Central locations. They assist you to navigate UON policies and procedures and the free services to support you during your study.

6 Semester Study Load Full-time study = Part-time study =
Domestic Students: Enrolled in 30 units or more per semester or enrolled in a total of 60 units or more in that academic year International Students: Enrolled in 40 units per semester Part-time study = Domestic Students: 10 – 20 units per semester International Students: Should enroll full-time. Meet with a Student Advisor or visit Student Central if you want to vary your course load Every 10 unit course requires 10 hours study per week

7 Terminology Core Courses = Elective =
compulsory courses completed by everyone studying the program. Elective = any unrestricted course in the University Delete any terms not relevant to the program

8 Terminology Lecture = Tutorial = Workshop =
Large group session (1-2 hours) where key content and ideas are introduced, delivered to you by a single lecturer. You will be prompted to develop an awareness of larger social issues. Tutorial = A class conducted in smaller groups where your tutor can explain aspects of the lecture and discuss study topics. You will have the chance to ask questions, get personalised assistance and participate in activities. Workshop = A medium group session (2-3hrs) where you’ll be prompted for your reactions, feelings and thoughts on content. Personal Study/Independent Learning = For every 10 unit course, it is expected that you would undertake up to 10 hours study per week including time spent on assignments, exam preparation, in PASS sessions, as well as regular week to week review and study. Delete any terms not relevant to the program

Sketchbooks Pen and paper for writing notes If drawing, you might want to get a pen tablet Print credits for readings and for access to printing Art supplies Delete anything not applicable and add anything not noted in the slide.

There is an online Blackboard site for all students in the Bachelor of Visual Communication Design. Each course has a Blackboard page. Course outlines, study materials and assessments can be accessed here. Visit this site regularly to check on program information, updates, program key contacts and help with your studies. All communication from Blackboard, teaching staff, programs & timetabling is via your UON . Be sure to check it regularly. UONCapture is the University's platform for recording classes and other teaching resources. Timetabled lectures conducted in equipped classrooms will be recorded. To access these recordings, please log into UONline and visit your course site. Then, click the UONCapture link at the bottom of your course menu to access recordings.

We are still recovering from the move but pretty much everything is up and running. Minor works may still be ongoing, but they will have minimal impact on your studies and longer term will mean better facilities.

19 When do tutorials start?
This depends on your course, so make sure you read your timetable carefully . CORE DESN1002: Contexts 2 – Week 1 Lecturer Simone and Tutors Ari, Sally and Chloe Electives Please check your timetable and course outlines. This will be program specific. It is worth mentioning how many labs/tuts students must attend. Talk about lectures starting next week Give the dates when tutorials/labs start (often week 2)

20 Textbooks Provided in your course outlines
Sometimes you will be required to purchase materials, software or pieces of equipment instead of books Which ones to buy When to buy – will they need the textbook in week 1?

21 Degree Structure The Bachelor of Visual Communication Design is made up of 240 units Most courses are worth 10 units The usual full time load is 4 courses (40 units) per semester

22 Program Plan A Program Plan outlines the structure of your degree. It is designed to provide you with an easy to follow plan you can use to check that you are on track with your degree, and help you choose courses that will be appropriate for your program.

23 How do I choose my electives?
Things you should consider before choosing Elective courses Do I want to take courses to support my future Career interests? Do I want to develop my skills in certain areas? Do I want to take courses for fun? Do I want to go on Exchange? Advice on different streams of electives can be found in the VisComm handbook site, under additional documents. Social Science/laws also have Laws Program Convenor – Neil Foster- but will hear from Neil at the LAWS orientation session

29 How to manage your assessment schedule
Use a diary Use a wall planner (grab a free wall planner at the Orientation Expo or from Student Central) Look at the due date and count backwards to work out when you need to start assignments Apps to help you plan, for example, My Study Life Whatever works for you, there is no right or wrong (This content could be delivered by a current student or the program convenor)

31 Are you eligible for credit?
If you have studied at another institution you may be eligible for credit. For advice, talk to your Program Advisor Credit information for current students This slide should be delivered by the Program Advisor

If possible, have an alumnus or alumna speak briefly about their experience in the program and how it led to their current career. If it is not possible to find an alumnus this slide can be deleted. Introduce Alumna/Alumnus talks about their career

33 Census Date: Friday Week 4 – 23rd August
FAQ’S Can I enrol part-time? Yes, you can, but you need to be aware that there is a maximum completion time of 8 years. All students must complete their program within this time frame. It is advised that you complete 20 units per semester to ensure that you will stay on schedule. Please seek advice from Program Convenor/program Advisor before dropping courses or changing to part-time. What if I need to take a semester off? Students can apply for this in their myHub portal, called a Leave of Absence. You can receive up to 12 months (2 Semesters) leave without additional approval. What if I have personal circumstances such as illness that means I can’t submit my assignments on time? Students can apply online for Adverse Circumstances through MyUON. Can I change my enrolment in the first few weeks of semester? Yes, you can add any new courses to your enrolment up until the end of the 2nd week of semester. You can drop any courses in myHub by the HECS census date which is:- Census Date: Friday Week 4 – 23rd August

34 What to expect in your first semester - tips from a current student
Work starts in Week 1 – there is no easing into it Assignments will be due throughout the semester depending on each individual course There are no formal exams for DESN badged courses. If you take electives in other areas. There may be. You’ll go through ups and downs – excitement, followed by self-doubt, followed by confidence Don’t be afraid to ask for help – knowing what you don’t know is a valuable skill Tailor this to the program – this content is best delivered by a current student. The dot points above are a guide only.

Have you: Organised a student card? Organised a parking permit or know which bus to catch? Know where your rooms are located? Downloaded the myuon app? Bought plenty of insect repellent? There may be program specific additions for this slide.
