Carbohydrates What are they? JOB: to provide energy Sources:
Sugars and starches that occur naturally in foods, mainly in plants. JOB: to provide energy Sources: Simple Carbohydrates come from fruits, vegetables, milk, and milk products Complex Carbohydrates come from rice, pasta, beans, and potatoes (starches) Simple v Complex Nutritionist recommend that half to two-thirds of your daily energy come from carbohydrates.

Proteins What are they? Proteins are nutrients your body uses to build, repair, and maintain cells and tissues. Job: build, repair, and maintain cells and tissues, fight diseases. Sources: beef, pork, veal, fish, poultry, eggs, diary products, nuts, peas, and dried beans What are amino acids? Chemical building blocks that make up protein. Complete proteins contain all nine of the essential amino acids.

Fats What are they? Job: Sources: Saturated fats (solid at room temp):
Fats promote healthy skin and normal cell growth. Job: Carry vitamins A, D. E and K to wherever they are needed in the body. Acts as cushion to protect vital organs Sources: Saturated fats (solid at room temp): Butter, cheese, fatty meats Unsaturated fats (liquid at room temp): Olive oil, nuts, avocados What could happen if you have a diet high in saturated fats?

Vitamins What are they? Substances that help your body fight infections and use other nutrients, among other jobs. Job: Help your body fight infection and help your body to produce energy Sources: Nutritious foods- dark leafy greens, orange fruits and vegetables, poultry, eggs, fish, whole grains, egg yolks, liver Water-soluble: Vitamins C and B– dissolve in water, body does not store Fat-soluble: Vitamins A, D, E, and K– stored in fat until needed. – body stores these.

Minerals What are they? Elements that help form healthy bones and teeth, and regulate certain body processes. Job: promote healthy bones, teeth and help the body run smoothly Sources: dairy products, fish, dark green leafy vegetables, fruits, meat, poultry, eggs, dry beans, peas, whole grain breads Types of Minerals: Calcium, Fluoride, Iron, potassium, Zinc

Water Job: Sources: Natural sources- waterfalls, oceans
Helps the body digest and absorb food Regulates body temperature Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells. Removes toxins and other wastes Cushions joints Protects tissues Organs from shock and damage. Sources: Natural sources- waterfalls, oceans Lack of water= Dehydration -causing fatigue, confusion, inability to focus. How much water do we need????
