1 Treatment of fetal circular shunt with non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs
Diagram showing circulation in fetal heart with unrestricted circular shunt (a) and with circular shunt restricted in response to non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drug (NSAID)‐mediated ductal constriction (b). (a) In unrestricted circular shunt, maximum and minimum arterial ductal flow velocities are low and diastolic umbilical (UA) and middle cerebral (MCA) artery flows are typically either absent or reversed owing to severe steal of systemic blood to right heart. (b) Following ductal constriction, there is a significant increase in ductal flow velocities, while diastolic UA and MCA flows become antegrade. DA, ductus arteriosus.
