2 Bell-ringer The word Renaissance means “rebirth”.
Think about a time in your life when you experienced a BIG change, like going to a new school. Pair with one person next to you about this change or experience Be ready to share.

4 Goal I can evaluate the emergence of the Renaissance and the influences from Europe, the Bubonic Plague, and the Muslim Moors. • SPI 7.43 Trace the emergence of the Renaissance, including influence from Moorish (or Muslim) scholars in Spain.

5 The Renaissance! The Renaissance was the “rebirth” in interest in classical (Greek and Roman) culture It began in Italy in the mid 1300s Merchants and crusaders learned about classical art and writings from the Byzantines and the Muslims

6 Where did it start? Started in Italy in 1350-1650 A.D.
Italian cities had become very wealthy and important trade centers. Encouraged more people to move to cities and become urban

7 The States of Italy Italy was mostly city states= powerful cities that ruled the surrounding towns and countryside. Many wars were fought between them. They were rich enough to afford ships and mercenaries.

9 How did the Italian States do this?
1. Central location 2. Crusaders brought back Arab scholars and merchants 3. The Mongols protected the Silk Road to increase their trade further. How would this change the focus of life for people? Ruins of the Roman Empire!

Why do you think Kublai Khan might have been amazed by the stories of Europe by Marco Polo? No need to write these down (polleverywhere)
