3 We’re Nearing Our Tragic Conclusion
At the start of our scene we see Paris talking to Friar Lawrence. Let’s think back for a second and remember the reason Romeo first visited the Friar. What did he go with him to plan? Why might we think Paris is talking to Friar Lawrence? Right! Paris is here to talk to the Friar about marrying Juliet. Friar Lawrence says that planning a marriage within a couple of days feels a little rushed and it is even worse when he doesn’t even know how Juliet feels about the marriage! Paris explains to him why it is the marriage must be rushed. What is the reason he gives? Paris states that Lord Capulet thinks getting married will help Juliet get over her grief about Tybalt’s death. The Friar makes it seem that the fact that the marriage is happening so suddenly is the reason he has his doubts, but we know that the marriage being rushed isn’t his concern. What is the actual reason? The fact that it is happening so soon isn’t the problem. Friar Lawrence knows that Juliet is already married to Romeo because he was the one who performed the wedding. Juliet enters the scene and now let’s see what she has to say about this whole thing.

4 “That may be, sir, when I may be a wife.”
Once Juliet enters the scene Paris tries to take the opportunity to finally sweet talk Juliet. He’s already calling her his wife. “My lady and my wife!” How does Juliet respond to this? Juliet is evasive of all of Paris’s advances and she even manages to make fun of him without him even realizing. Paris continues to be loving, but he also seems a little condescending and possessive over the girl who has yet to become his wife. “Do not deny to him that you love me.” Much like the scene with her mother, Juliet again hides the real meaning of her words.. She masks the meaning of her words by engaging in some witty wordplay. Explain the meaning of the Juliet’s exchange with Paris. What does Juliet mean when she says she will be happy when she can be not Paris’s wife, but instead simply “a wife” meaning a wife to Romeo. When she says “I will confess to you that I love him” who is she talking about? Romeo! Juliet like when she manipulated her words to sound convincing to her mother while defending Romeo just managed to do it again and fool Paris into believing she is happy with their arrangement.

5 Exit Paris Friar Lawrence decides that he has heard enough and thinks that it is time for him to step in and says that Juliet has to go through confession is she is to marry Paris. Paris takes the hint and leaves. Juliet reveals the real reason she is there and it is because she wants to know what she can do to avoid her situation. She also reveals to us and Friar Lawrence what it is she will do if he canning help her. What does she say? Juliet takes out a dagger during her conversation with the Friar to show how serious she is about killing herself if she is unable to be with Romeo. “I long to die/ If what thou speakest speak not of remedy.” Remember, the Friar is the last person Juliet has to turn to and if he fails to help her she has exhausted all of her options, leaving her with death as her only escape. Juliet speaks so fondly of her marriage to Romeo and it shows just how committed she is to him. She won’t marry Paris because she would dishonoring that marriage. This compares to how the Friar chooses to help Juliet. It would be wrong to perform another wedding whole Juliet remains married to Romeo

6 “I do spy a kind of hope” Friar Lawrence tells Juliet to hold off on her last resort for now because he has a plan! He says that because Juliet was so ready to kill herself she’ll probably be okay with something similar. What’s the plan? Juliet is to go home and pretend that she wants to marry Paris. This will please her parents and she’ll have a place to live. Now the day before the wedding she has to make sure she is all alone, not even the nurse may know about the plan. She is then going to drink a potion that is going to put her into a deep sleep for 42 hours during which she will look dead. Her pulse will stop, her skin will be cold, and she will be pale. Everyone will think she is dead, except for those who know! She’ll seem dead when Paris comes for her and she’ll be given an open coffin funeral and taken to the Capulet family tomb where Romeo will come and take her away once she wakes up. How exactly does this solve the situation that Juliet is in? It saves her the dishonor of having been disowned by her family and it helps her avoid a second marriage which the Friar would be against conducting himself. Friar Lawrence says that he will send a letter to Romeo informing him of the plan. What could possibly go wrong?

7 The Wedding is Soon Back at the Capulet house we have the family getting everything in order for the wedding between Paris and Juliet. Juliet comes back from her visit with the Friar visibly happy. Why is she happy again? Capulet asks where she has been and she responds that somewhere that has allowed her to see her wrongs ways and begs for forgiveness. “Where I have learned me to repent the sin of disobedient opposition” This is different because before Juliet had made what she said sound like another, but here she’s straight up lying about things to her parents. Capulet is happy to be hearing this news and says that this is such good news he’s decided to have the wedding a day early. It is happening on Wednesday now!

8 Reflection We’ve learned about the Friar’s plan for the two lovers to be reunited again. What might possibly go wrong with the plan? OR We’ve also learned about how the wedding is now being held a day earlier than originally planned. How might this affect the course of events? Answer one question in 3-5 sentences. Make your predictions.
