3 Before We Get Started We’ve discussed certain themes related to Romeo and Juliet such as love, fate versus free will, and parenthood. We’re going to better understand those plots, themes, and characters by analyze them a little better. Let’s talk about the role of parents quickly. This will help those of you who haven’t written the essay yet. How do they influence the play? Think about the Capulets specifically. Right! They’re the ones who force Juliet into the marriage with Paris which marks the beginning of the end for our characters. While we’re watching take notes about anything you think is interesting, useful to know, or anything else that sticks out to you. Shakespeare Uncovered is hosted by Joseph Fiennes, played Shakespeare in a movie titled “Shakespeare in Love”

4 Discussion Questions The video says Romeo and Juliet is filled with “if only moments.” What are some of them? How would the events have changed “if” something had been said or done differently in that particular scene? Why is Romeo and Juliet different from other tragedies? What insight into Romeo’s point of view during the death scene does Orlando Bloom provide? What insight into the audience’s point of view during the death scene does Condola Rashad provide? The video provides for us many reasons the play can still be relevent to people today. Do you agree with those reasons?

5 Classwork + group work Using the play, complete the classwork assignment about Romeo’s soliloquy. You can work with the people at your table. I will be walking around helping you out if needed.

6 Reflection Respond to the aim: How does fate play a role in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet?
