1 Romeo and Juliet Pre-reading Date:
Objectives Prepare to read William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet by discussing images, completing an anticipation guide, watching the trailer and preparing a plan. Understand why we examine Shakespeare. Warm–up – consider the following, then move to next slide. Have you ever heard of the phrase ‘from two different worlds’? For example: ‘It’ll never work out between that couple. They’re from two different worlds’.

2 Do you recognise any of the following movies?
How might people be from ‘different worlds’ in these images?

3 Anticipation Guide The next slide and sheet has an anticipation guide for Romeo and Juliet. This is when we discuss questions having to do with the theme of the story before we read it. This answers the questions of ‘Why do we study Shakespeare?’ – because these questions are important.

4 Anticipation sheet – circle your answer and write a one sentence explanation of your choice. When asked, stand to display your choice. It’s OK to keep a secret from someone you love. AGREE DISAGREE If you fall in love with someone of whom your family disapproves, you should marry the person regardless of the obstacles. AGREE DISAGREE   True love can overcome any obstacle AGREE DISAGREE Parents should have a role in determining whom their child marries AGREE DISAGREE It’s ok to fight someone if they say an offensive comment to you AGREE DISAGREE   Love at first sight truly exists AGREE DISAGREE Feelings that you have really can make you feel “love sick.” AGREE DISAGREE   Desperate situations call for desperate measures AGREE DISAGREE   You should always be supportive of your family and friends, whether you agree with their choices or not AGREE DISAGREE   It’s ok to hold a grudge against someone if they’ve hurt you in the past AGREE DISAGREE

5 Let’s watch the trailer next for Romeo and Juliet.
Afterwards, you shall be asked to write down two things you took from the trailer (two ideas, beliefs, opinions, what they play might be about or perhaps how it might end). Please answer in the format ‘I think ’ or ‘I believe ’

7 General Schedule of class Tw0 things to keep in mind.
Warm-up will ask questions to prepare you for that day’s topic. It should be fun. We’ll read through the scene using the audiobook. Between 7-15 minutes. We’ll do a short, then a long exercise which will ask you to discuss and create scenarios similar to what is going on in the play. We’ll then be writing down answers to questions. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, it hammers in knowledge of what is going on in the play. Secondly, it gives you better notes that are in your own words and with more quotes you can use later. We’ll end with a cooldown question. This should be fun and make you think. Tw0 things to keep in mind. There will be lessons to learn from this: don’t rush into things, don’t hold grudges, don’t do drugs, etc. Seriously think about these lessons as we continue. This is for the Junior Cert. You will be asked for knowledge of the characters and events so focus as hard as you can with that purpose in mind.

8 Do you believe in destiny? Why or why not?
Cooldown Question Do you believe in destiny? Why or why not? Destiny is a hidden power which controls all things. No matter what anyone does, this power will make certain things happen. Homework Ask one person not in this class what they think or know about Romeo and Juliet. Name them, write down their answer and report this back to the class.
