1 Environmental Issues and Our Roles in Them

2 The Ozone/ Greenhouse Effect

3 Ozone Layer Depletion What is Ozone Layer?
A region of the upper atmosphere, between about 15 and 30 kilometers (10 and 20 miles) in altitude, containing a relatively high concentration of ozone that absorbs solar ultraviolet radiation in a wavelength range not screened by other atmospheric components. Also called ozonosphere.

4 Ozone layer protects us from the ultraviolet rays.
But a very large ozone hole was discovered in the ozone layer over Antarctic. It is as large as 3 times the area of Australia.

5 Pollution Contamination of any part in the environment
What are the different types of pollution that humans cause?

6 Fossil Fuels What are fossil fuels?
Remains of organisms from long ago used for energy. Can we stop them? - Yes, there are alternative options to fossil fuels. How are they harming the environment? - Because the remains contain carbon which we are using for energy, we are releasing a lot more CO2 in the atmosphere than we should by using the fossil fuels.

7 Acid Rain What is acid rain?
A type of pollution formed from water vapor and gases from cars, trucks, and factories. How can we reduce our part in acid rain? Carpool, travel less, reforestation You answer? How is acid rain affecting our environment?

8 Biodegradeable Something that can be broken down over time.
Most biodegradeable products come from plants, animals, and other living matter. How do you think biodegradeable products can help the environment?

10 What is the greenhouse effect?

11 GHG’s (Greenhouse Gases)

12 Student Interpretation

13 What would happen if the earth had no ozone?
It would freeze, the ozone is like its blanket keeping the heat in. The sun would overwhelmingly zap the earth with heat. But the heat would bounce off of the earth back into space.

14 What does Biomagnification mean?
When the concentrations of pesticides such as DDT increase as the trophic levels increase.
