1 Measurement Part 1

2 Why Measure? Measurement is important because our eyes can deceive us.
Scientists use the International System of Units (SI). Advantages of SI: It helps scientists share and compare their results. 2. All units are based on the number which make conversions easy.

3 Units Measurement Base Unit Symbol length meter m volume liter L mass gram g time second s temperature degree Kelvin K

4 Choosing a Unit A measurement must always include a number and a unit cm The unit depends on the size of the object. For example: What unit would you use for the length of a pencil? For the distance between cities?

5 Length The SI base unit for length is the meter.
Metric rulers and meter sticks are used to measure length.

6 Using Meter Sticks Each number on a ruler or meter stick represents a centimeter.

7 Using Metric Rulers What do the tiny lines between the centimeters represent? They represent millimeters or 1/10 of a centimeter.
