8 Breakthroughs in Medicine and Chemistry
Revolution in medicine began in the late 16th Century. Galen: Greek Physician Views about anatomy were wrong. Used animals, not people, for dissection.

9 Andreas Vesalius WAS HE RIGHT??? Professor at the University of Padua.
Dissecting human bodies. Gave accurate view of organs and general structure of human body. Believed the body had two kinds of blood. WAS HE RIGHT???

10 William Harvey English Scientist
Proved that the heart was the beginning point of the blood’s circulation. Blood makes a complete circuit through the body. Used reason to make breakthrough discoveries.

11 Robert Boyle First to Conduct Controlled experiments.
Boyle’s Law: volume of gas changes with amount of pressure put on it.

12 Antoine Lavoisier Founder of Modern Chemistry.
Invented a system of naming chemical elements.

Margaret Cavendish Criticized the belief that humans were the master of nature. Maria Winkelmann Most famous female German astronomer. Discovered a comet.

Separated mind over matter. Considered father of modern rationalism. The idea that reason is the chief source of knowledge.

Systematic Procedure for collecting and analyzing evidence. Francis Bacon: - English philosopher that developed the scientific method.

16 Inductive Reasoning Making Generalizations from observations and experiments organized to test hypotheses. Bacon’s way of reaching conclusions about nature. Good Example: Bad Example: All observed crows are black Many speeding tickets are given to teenagers. Therefore: All crows are black Therefore: All teenagers drive fast.
