2 Big Questions How did the Council of Trent reflect the new goals of the Catholic Church following The Protestant Reformation? What was the Scientific Revolution? In what ways did the witch hunts of the 1600’s show that the Scientific Revolution was an elite movement?

3 Catholic Reformation Movement within the Catholic Church responding to the Protestant Reformation Affirmed Catholic ideas and addressed weaknesses Pope’s goal= restore and regain. Also known as the counter-reformation.

Ptolemaic/Geocentric Theory- earth is the center of the galaxy - other planets revolve around it. Things get more perfect the closer they get to Heaven THEN CAME…

9 Scientific Revolution
Heliocentric Theory- sun is the center of the universe (Copernicus). Imperfect heavenly bodies (Galileo); (bye, bye Aristotle’s crystal spheres) Dominated by reason, natural laws (Newton’s 3 laws of motion) Watchmaker (Deist) God Emphasize the influence of the renaissance on the change in thoughts regarding science. Also emphasize that s rev. was an elite movement.

10 Great Scientists Copernicus-Heliocentric Theory
Galileo- telescope: planets were actually imperfect spheres (disproves old Aristotle’s views). Newton- calculus and gravity prove new theory Kepler- 3 laws of planetary motion: planets move in elliptical, not circular orbits. Bacon- Scientific Method. BIG THEME: Reason isn’t good enough anymore. You must be able to prove theories! Consolidate!
