1 Accreditation Leadership Committee Opening Meeting
October 10, 2007 1:00 PM Heritage Ballroom

2 Charge ISU needs to align its mission with current practice, values, and context. This is the time for the campus to come together, reflect on its accomplishments and envision its future. It is an opportunity for the campus to define where it is as well as where it wants to go.

3 Charge (Continued) The campus was charged by the BOT at their Sept. 28, 2007 meeting to review the University’s mission statement and to ensure alignment with the University’s strategic directions. This task is to be completed by January 2008 in preparation for action by the BOT at their February 2008 scheduled meeting.

4 Mission Committee Goal
To develop Mission and Core Value Statements that are consistent with the University’s Vision/Promise Statement, strategic initiatives, and trustee directive.

5 Centrality of Mission Redesign to NCA Self-Study
Criterion One: Mission & Integrity The organization operates with integrity to ensure the fulfillment of its mission through structures and processes that involve the board, administration, faculty, staff, and students. Criterion Two: Preparing for the Future The organization's allocation of resources and its processes for evaluation and planning demonstrate its capacity to fulfill its mission, improve the quality of its education, and respond to future challenges and opportunities. Criterion Three: Student Learning & Effective Teaching The organization provides evidence of student learning and teaching effectiveness that demonstrates it is fulfilling its educational mission. Criterion Four: Acquisition, Discovery, and the Application of Knowledge The organization promotes a life of learning for its faculty, administration, staff, and students by fostering and supporting inquiry, creativity, practice, and social responsibility in ways consistent with its mission. Criterion Five: Engagement and Service As called for by its mission, the organization identifies its constituencies and serves them in ways both value.

6 Definitions Vision – reflects where the university wants to be in the future. It also reflects the optimistic view of the university’s future. Mission – Defines where the university is going now, basically describing the purpose, why the University exist. Values – A set of core beliefs that reflect the culture and priorities of the University. These values are protected and supported during the progression and evolution of the university.

Indiana State University is the pre-eminent public institution that integrates teaching and research for high-achieving, goal-oriented students who seek opportunities for personal, professional and intellectual growth on a diverse civically engaged campus. 8 Current Mission Statement
As a publicly-assisted institution of higher learning, Indiana State University embraces its mission to educate students to be productive citizens and enhance the quality of life of The citizens of Indiana by making the knowledge and expertise of its faculty available And accessible. These purposes are served when the University disseminates knowledge through instruction and extends and applies knowledge through research, creative and scholarly activities and public service. The University fulfills its mission statewide; however, its influence is also national and international in scope. Given its location, Indiana State University responds with particular sensitivity to the needs and interests of the citizens of west central Indiana. In serving its mission, the University provides quality, affordable academic programs and educational environments to foster holistic student growth and development. Undergraduate programs and specialized fields of study are comprehensive in scope while graduate programs are selective as appropriate to the needs of society and the expertise of the faculty. In its role as a public institution, the University is expected to be an inclusive academic community reflective of the greater society, serving a student body diverse in academic interests, age, gender, economic status, and ethnicity. To remain vital in carrying out its institutional purposes, Indiana State University is committed to the ongoing assessment and improvement of its primary activities.

9 Current Core Values Service – The University is committed to being a responsive and caring institution, dedicated to the interests of the entire campus community, and it particular its students. The value of service has extended as well to being responsive to the needs of the local community and to society in general. Access – The University seeks to be an inclusive academic community, providing opportunity to students with a wide range of academic abilities and educational backgrounds, ethnic and cultural heritages, family experiences and economic means, physical and learning differences, mobile and place-bound circumstances, and career and life expectations.

10 Current Core Values Success – The University is dedicated to assisting students achieve their goals through personal attention, a supportive environment, essential academic and personal services, and broad-based financial assistance. Innovation – The University seeks to be creative and innovative in meeting the needs of its students, its faculty, and society through curriculum evolution, scholarship, and the contribution of professional expertise to the larger community. Excellence – The University encourages students, faculty, and staff to excell in all they do by not only meeting rigorous professional and academic standards but also by exceeding them.

11 DRAFT Proposed New Mission Statement
Indiana State University is a public, comprehensive undergraduate institution with selected graduate programs. Through the active integration of teaching, scholarship, and engagement, ISU provides a supporting and challenging learning environment that prepares high-achieving graduates for productive careers and responsible citizenship. Our faculty, staff, students, and alumni provide leadership to enhance the social, cultural, and economic well-being of those in the Wabash Valley, state of Indiana, and beyond.

12 Evolving Core Values Opportunity – The University offers a diverse and engaged academic community, providing opporunities for high-achieving students with a wide range of academic abilities, talents, and educational backgrounds, ethnic and cultural heritage, family experience and economic means, physical and learning differences, mobile and place-bound circumstances, and of career and life expectations. 14 Today’s Task FEEDBACK The Mission Committee needs your assistance. Our goal is to continually seek the input of the campus community in the development of a new mission statement and values. You are the first group that we are requesting your review and initial assessment of the draft of the mission statement and the current and evolving values. On your table you will find two forms. One for your to respond to the mission statement and the second for your thoughts on values. Each table will be asked to complete the forms and then to report out to the larger groups today. The forms are to be submitted to me. Each table will need one person to assume the role of facilitator and reporter.

PROVIDE GUIDANCE AND INPUT ON THE NCA SELF-STUDY PROCESS AND ENSURE BROAD PARTICIPATION & TRANSPARENCY OF PROCESS; ADVOCATE FOR THE NCA PROCESS AND ENSURE THAT THE ENTIRE ISU COMMUNITY IS AWARE AND SUPPORTIVE OF THE SELF-STUDY EFFORT; REVIEW THE WORK OF ACCREDITATION COMMITTEES AND ENSURE THAT THE UNIVERSITY IS MEETING ALL CRITERIA WITH APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTATION; PARTICIPATE IN THE CREATION OF THE UNIVERSITY’S EFFORT TO DEVELOP A NEW MISSION AND PARTICIPATE IN ADVOCATING FOR THAT MISSION; ALERT LEADERSHIP TO CHALLENGES HINDERING UNIVERSITY’S ABILITY TO SATISFY ANY OF THE CRITERIA AND PRESENT OPTIONS FOR OVERCOMING BARRIERS; REPORT TO THE PRESIDENT PERIODICALLY ON PROGRESS TOWARD ACCREDITATION; ENSURE THAT THE FINAL SELF-STUDY REPORT IS EDORSED BY THE CAMPUS BEFORE THE PRESIDENT SUBMITS IT FOR APPROVAL TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
