1 Happy Thursday 02-21-19 Time to begin genetics:
Please write an answer for the following in your notebook: 1) What do you think genetics studies? 2) What exactly is heredity?

2 Genetics (please write this)
Genetics is a branch of biology concerned with the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in organisms.  Genes : units of heredity passed on to offspring (children) Genetic variation : the differences between individuals due to their genes Heredity : the passing on of traits from parents to their offspring

3 1. Where is the DNA stored inside of a cell?
Pretest: 1. Where is the DNA stored inside of a cell?

4 2. A unicellular organism contains all the components to be alive in ________
A) a lot of cells B) millions and millions of cells C) trillions of cells D) a single cell

5 3. Which of the following is correct?
A) cells  tissue  tissue cells  organic cells  the body B) cells  tissue  organs  organ systems  body C) cells  tissue  organs  tissue systems  body D) cells  tissue  tissue cells organ systems  body

6 4. DNA stands for: A) deoxyribonucleic acid B) deoxygenated aminos C) deoxynutrino angstrom D) deoxyribonutritional acid

7 5. What is cell division? A) the math conducted to determine how many cells you have B) when cells split and divide into new cells C) a specialized “division” of science that studies cells

8 6. What is mitosis? A) the part of the cell cycle that divides the nucleus B) a disease that cells can get C) a part of the cell, an organelle

9 7. Solve the Punnett square
B = brown eye dominant b = blue eye recessive 7. Solve the Punnett square Mother Bb B b b bb Bb Father bb b bb Bb

10 Your job today: READ PAGES 9-15 Quiz tomorrow
1) What are your TOP 5 Facts from this section? 2) What four characteristics are common to all living things? 3) How did the invention of the microscope change the study of biology? 4) What do scientists mean when they say “life comes from life”? 5) What are two characteristics of a scientific theory? 6) Explain the three concepts that make up the cell theory. 7) Draw a Venn diagram and compare and contrast unicellular and multicellular organisms. 8) Explain Louis Pasteur’s experiment in steps. 9) How did Pasteur’s work support the cell theory and how did it disprove spontaneous generation?

11 Happy Friday! Before we can begin our genetic unit, we must rewind to 6th grade and revisit cells and the parts of cells 1) Name the two main cell types Prokaryotes (bacteria with no nucleus) and Eukaryotes (all others, have a nucleus) 2) Name 2 parts of a cell and list their functions Lysosome, ribosome, mitochondria, cell membrane, Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus…..

12 Your work for today: You have been given two cell drawings (a plant cell and an animal cell) VERY neatly, using precision, color the cells. Each organelle should be different to help you identify them. As you color, notice the labels on the bottom have a bubble next to them. Color the bubble the same color that you used to color that part of the cell. Tape or glue your completed cell into your notebook on its own page. On the page next to it you will need to define some of the organelles. Use the book (no cell phones or laptops needed). Cell membrane Cytoplasm Cell wall Nucleus Organelle Mitochondria Chloroplast Ribosomes Endoplasmic reticulum Golgi apparatus Vacuole Lysosome
