1 Welcome to Fifth Grade with Mrs. Rooney and Ms. Buchholz

2 All About Us Jenny I grew up in Palos Verdes.
I attended Dapplegray Intermediate, Miraleste HS. I attended USC and received Master’s degrees from USC and from UCLA. My experience I’ve been teaching for 23 years. I have taught most grade levels.

3 All About Us Beth I grew up in Palos Verdes.
I attended Ridgecrest Intermediate, PVHS. I attended CSULB and received my Master’s degree from Walden University. My experience I’ve been teaching for 20 years. I have also taught second grade, but fifth is my favorite.

4 Our Goals To give your child the academic and social skills they need to progress to sixth grade and become lifelong learners. To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. To help your child learn how to be a more organized and successful student. Organize binders weekly…self, nightly! Academic Enrichment sign-ups!!

5 Class Subjects The subjects we cover during fifth grade are:
Reading and writing (Homeroom) Math (Mrs. Rooney) Science (Ms. Buchholz) Social studies (Ms. Buchholz) Music and art (Music teachers, AAYF, Art Trek) TLC (Mrs. Sanderson and Mr. Proudfoot) Performing Art (John and Susan Brown) PE (Mrs. Winbauer and Ms. Jessie)

7 Academic Enrichment sign-ups!!
Please sign up for at least one activity; preferably several! These project-based learning experiences bring education ALIVE!

8 5th Grade Shop Sign up for a month to run the shop and bring in treats. 1-2 from each room should work. Shop can be ANY day the last week of the month parents in charge would like to run it. Shop is during recess.

9 Teaching Parent Shifts
8:10-8:30 (20) Hyte Street Drop-off (19) Basketball-4 Square. Have students quietly enter the class and begin morning work. Complete any assignments on Parent Desk Assist with grading, filing, organizing room and papers, Wipe down desks, chairs and doors with Clorox wipes, sharpen pencils

Please do not use your phone in class or on the playground. If you MUST make a call, excuse yourself. 10:40-11:00 (20) Basketball-4 Square (19) Ball fields – soccer/baseball Have students line up quietly and enter the class to begin work.

12 “This doesn’t work…yet.”
The Power of YET! The Power of YET “I don’t get it.” “I can’t do this.” “This doesn’t work.” Take a deep breath. Go for a short stroll. Then add a “yet” to the end of your sentence: As in: “I don’t get it…yet.” “I can’t do this…yet.” “This doesn’t work…yet.” It may not be easy, but it doesn’t mean you’re never going to meet the challenge.

See Edlio (but AGENDA comes first) May not include incomplete work.** You may help with homework but let your child lead. They will always have SOMETHING to do…even if it’s reading.
