1 Simple Machines Week of December 17th

2 Levers A lever is a simple machine that consists of a bar that pivots at a fixed point called a fulcrum.

3 First-Class Levers The fulcrum is between the input force and the load. Always change the direction of the input force.

4 Second-Class Levers The load of a second-class lever is between the fulcrum and the input force. Do not change the direction of the force, but allow for less force to be applied.

5 Third-Class Levers The input force is between the fulcrum and the load. Do not change the direction or amount of force.

7 Pulleys A simple machine that consists of a wheel over which a rope, chain, or wire passes.

8 Types of Pulleys A fixed pulley is attached to something that does not move; changes the direction of the force. A movable pulley is attached to the object being moved; does not change the direction, but increases force.

9 Types of Pulleys cont. A block and tackle is when a fixed pulley and a movable pulley are used together.

11 Wheel and Axle A simple machine consisting of two circular objects of different sizes; the wheel is larger of the two circular objects.

12 Mechanical Advantage of Wheel and Axle
Can be found by dividing the radius of the wheel by the radius of the axle. MA is greater than 1 if the wheel is larger than the axle.

14 Inclined Planes A simple machine that is a straight, slanted surface, which facilitates the raising of loads. A ramp

15 Mechanical Advantage of Inclined Planes
The greater the ratio of an inclined plane’s length to its height is, the greater the mechanical advantage.

17 Wedges A simple machine that is made up of two inclined planes and that moves Often used for cutting.

18 Mechanical Advantage of Wedges
The longer and thinner the wedge is, the greater its mechanical advantage.

20 Screws A simple machine that consists of an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. Screws are used most commonly as fasteners.

21 Mechanical Advantage of Screws
The longer the spiral on a screw is and the closer together the threads are, the greater the screw’s mechanical advantage.

23 Compound Machines A machine made of more than one simple machine.

24 Mechanical Efficiency of Compound Machines
The mechanical efficiency of compound machines is low. Compound machines have more moving parts and therefore more friction to overcome.
