2 Adverbs are: Words that describe (modify) a verb, an adjective or another adverb

3 Adverbs answer the question “how?”
The dog barked LOUDLY. How did the dog bark? The tiger waits PATIENTLY. How did the tiger wait? The girl sits QUIETLY. How does the girl sit?

4 Adverbs answer the question “where?”
The museum has paintings INSIDE. Where are the paintings? The forest fire started HERE. Where did the forest fire start?

5 Adverbs answer the question “when?”
Let’s go to the beach TODAY. When should we go to the beach? The police will arrive SOON. When will the police arrive?

6 Position of Adverbs Slowly, the shark was circling the boat.
The shark was slowly circling the boat. The shark was circling the boat slowly.

7 Adverbs Modifying Verbs
Can come before, after or between verbs they modify The man QUICKLY walked home. The baby crawled AWKWARDLY. Keisha has ALREADY completed her work.

8 Adverbs Modifying Adjectives
Sally is REALLY slow. Harry and I are TERRIBLY late. The dog was HORRIBLY smelly.

The bat flew FRIGHTENINGLY CLOSE. The fish was swimming VERY FAST. Elena finished the problem MORE QUICKLY than I did.

10 Helpful Hints: NOT and NEVER are always adverbs
Many adverbs end in –ly but not all of them
